تحكي الرواية منذ بدايتها قصة جمعت الراوي مع رسام عجوز في مرسمه في التكية السليمانية في دمشق، مهووس بجمع الأشياء القديمة، كان قد عمل في الشعبة الثانية (المخابرات السورية)، في الخمسينيات، وأطلق بيده رصاصة الرحمة، كما يقول، على الكثيرين من معارضي السلطات التي حكمت سوريا وبلاد الشام.

وتتوالى صور كثيرة في رواية "عين الشرق"، وملل ونحل من مشارق الأرض ومغاربها تلامحت وجوهها في الازقة قديمة ومحدثة، لكن البطل هو المدينة، دمشق هي "عين الشرق".

كثيرون سيعرفون أنفسهم في "عين الشرق"، ولربما تغيرت، أحيانا، أسماء وملامح، إلا أن اللحظة الطويلة التي سبقت انفجار الجسد السوري، لم تكن بلا مقدمات ولا أبطال ساهموا في زيادة تلك التضاريس وعورة، وكانوا من بين أسباب كتابة هذه الرواية.
