About this listen

My first exposure to the Spanish Civil War

I hadn’t really heard or read much about the civil war before this, and Pérez Reverte always does his research, so I trust this is based as much as possible in what was going on at the time.

A good story, quite graphic at times in case you’re squeamish... though I would say I had an inkling of where the twist was coming from, even if not precisely why.

For those of you who have read or listened to a lot of Perez Reverte, I have been a big fan of his novels but never quite got into the Alatriste series. I am though looking forward to the next Falcó.

Uncomfortably sexist

I’m afraid I couldn’t really comment on the plot as from the outset to, maybe, three quarters of the way through, each female character introduced (of which there were many!) were objectified in such a derogatory fashion.
Their appearance was clearly of the utmost importance. As was their ability to lose all inhibitions at Falco’s presence. Woe betide any woman who had the audacity to leave the house without wearing make up.
Shame on the woman who doesn’t have the ‘perfect’ body. If a woman is intelligent she had to be pretty with it as the protagonist would take a beautiful woman over an intelligent one every time - this is stated by the protagonist himself. At one point he stated that a character who didn’t wear a scrap of make up nor provocative clothes and clearly didn’t flirt back or swoon at his very presence must have been a lesbian! But fear not! It turns out this woman is straight in the end!
All other ‘red blooded’ women were either clearly in lust with him or just deluding themselves.
Very outdated and uncomfortable listen, to the point that I’d find myself muttering ‘oh here we go’ every time a woman was mentioned. By the time new female characters stopped being introduced I’d lost the bulk of the story and could relate nothing of the plot.
I know it’s set in the 1930s but it wasn’t written then. Really no excuse
The only reason this gets 2 stars is because the reader himself was good and handled the different character voices well.
The story gets one star as there’s no way to put 0 stars without it looking like I forgot to rate it...
