About this listen

'These Benson and de Vere stories are unputdownable... A five star bravura performance. This writer gets better and better' A.N. Wilson

The Hither Green murder...

William Benson knows what it's like to be accused of something you didn't do - the fear, the vulnerability and the nightmare of watching your life unravel. Now he speaks on behalf of those who have no voice, defending anyone who claims to be innocent. This time, it's Karmen Naylor, estranged daughter of a south London crime boss, fighting a murder charge and desperate to be believed. But Benson becomes trapped into a grudge match between two rival clans, endangering himself and those he loves.

Tess de Vere is by Benson's side but she's keeping something from him. A stranger on the trail of a secret death squad operating in Northern Ireland during the Troubles brings a terrible secret into the heart of her own life. And he won't go away.

Can Tess and Will find their way through all the secrets and the lies? Should justice always be served - and if so, at what cost?

'The courtroom scenes are brilliant, and Benson really comes alive under pressure. Stubborn, fitful and contradictory, he's a highly individualised creation' Spectator

'Punchy dialogue and devious plotlines . . . compelling' The Times

Excellent writing and narration. The s of the series was wrapped up in book 3 but the characters and writing are interesting and so well done that it is easy to see this becoming an extensive series of books. Highly recommend.

Well written and wonderfully narrated. I'm really enjoying this series. I thought it was getting a bit formulaic at one point but so glad I stuck with it. Twists and turns aplenty,

Excellent, entertaining listen.

I have just enjoyed listening to all four of the Benson & Devere novels back to back - all are wonderful listens - fantastically crafted & read. Two of the best characters on the page, supported by an array of characters all of whom are well formed. Simply put books you will be so pleased to have listened to. More please - much more!

I adored this book. Full of twists and turns and I had been eagerly awaiting the latest Benson and De Vere saga. Brilliant writing, really credible characters and there is clearly a book 5 to come. The courtroom scenes were riveting and the narration was top class as always. Highly recommend this.

This is as others have suggested the best book yet by this author. Also nice that Tess gets to be the brilliant one in the end!

The series is fresh and maintain great story lines. This addition is no exception. It has enough twists and undercurrents to make it a page turner. Great narration as always which brings the books alive.
Well done.

I just love the stories which are all meticulously plotted. And the narrator is brilliant, with a well modulated delivery and no silly accents.
