About this listen

Fanatical about cricket since he was a boy, Miles Jupp would do anything to see his heroes play. But perhaps deciding to bluff his way into the press corps during England's Test series in India wasn't his best idea. By claiming to be the cricket correspondent for BBC Scotland and getting a job with the (Welsh) Western Mail, Miles lands the press pass that will surely be the ticket to his dreams.

Soon, he finds himself in cricket heaven - drinking with David Gower and Beefy, sharing bar room banter with Nasser Hussain, and swapping diarrhea stories with the Test Match Special team. Amazing! But struggling in the heat under the burden of his own fibs, reality soon catches up with Miles as - like a cricket-obsessed Boot from Evelyn Waugh's Scoop - he bumbles from one disaster to the next.

A joyous, charming, yet cautionary tale, Fibber in the Heat is for anyone who's ever dreamt about doing nothing but watching cricket all day long.

One of my top 10 books! I dont even like cricket

Would you consider the audio edition of Fibber in the Heat to be better than the print version?

Miles is outstanding with his dry wit and observation. A must if you like to smile and appreciate life in an other country and life as a cricket correspondent.

Even if you aren't a cricket fan it's great

Amusing, listened to it maybe 4 times now. a bit reminiscent of Danny Wallace but better language.

Great cricketing adventure

Often the idea of an author reading their own work is better than the reality. Not here. Jupp is an excellent narrator. And an excellent writer. As a cricket fan I thoroughly enjoyed Jupp’s adventure. I also enjoyed the glimpses of a colossal bureaucracy with a seemingly infinite number of cogs to frustrate any who dare ask anything of it.

From stage to page successfully

This narrative started life as a live show which was universally acclaimed - and deservedly so. Now Miles Jupp has expanded this into a full length account of his rather naive attempt to become a cricket journalist on England's tour of India. His performance of the book is every bit as wonderful as the show. Often hilarious, sometimes heart wrenching, always engaging we accompany him as he chases his dream through a whole string of obstacles through to it's - and his - ultimate realisation.

You don't need to be a cricket fan to enjoy this book. It's a great reminiscence on any level.

Not just for cricket fans

Huge fan of M. Jupp, no so much cricket!
This book was very enjoyable and, at times, incredibly funny. When it was not funny it was passionate, detailed and a vivid account of a remarkable journey. But mostly it was funny!
I'm almost inclined to watch a bit of cricket now......almost!
Looking forward to giving it another listen.
Thouroughly recommend it.

Could not put it down!

Never heard of Miles Jupp before this, but love cricket and was looking for something different. The excellent reviews convinced me to buy it... What a story! So amusing, so insightful, so unassuming and so bashful, and the narration is absolutely wonderful. If you like cricket and humour, please read.

You probably need to like cricket...

I really enjoyed Miles Jupp narrating his book. His tone is very easy to listen to and at times it feels like you are listening to stories being told in the pub - it is delivered on a very personal basis. As a fan of cricket, I knew who he was talking about and could understand the cricketing references. If you don't enjoy cricket you may find sections of this book incomprehensible but the book is so much more than just a diary of a cricket tour. The emotions felt come out of the naration very well and the stories told are terrific. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
