About this listen
The aging First Lord of Alera has fallen in battle. Yet his people must continue to resist an invading inhuman army. Desperate Alerans even pledge fealty to the Vord Queen to survive, turning the incredible power of Aleran furies back on their own people. And despite all efforts, the Alerans are being ground into dust and pushed to the farthest reaches of their own realm.
However, Tavi has returned with vital insights from the Canim Blood Lands. He knows how to counter the Vord and, more importantly, believes human ingenuity can equal fury-born powers. Now events are rushing towards a last stand, where Tavi and the last Aleran legions must formulate a dangerous new strategy, together. For a civilisation is on the brink of extinction.

like an old man
every now and then the author pauses the book to dsscribe something he has already established at length.
exposition like a sledgehammer, or very long descriptions

generally good with minor flaws
good listen, nice work with the voices making the characters sound distinct. could have used a breath of space between chapters, and those trumpets are generally detracting

Brilliant
I’m a Jim butcher fan anyway so I was bound to like this series. It was read amazingly well and kept me hooked. Character growth was excellent and as usual, Jim had you rooting for the right people the whole way. Well worth listening to this audiobook series. I would recommend it.

A True Epic Fantasy
Jim Butcher created a truly epic fantasy. The story from Furies of Calderon, right up to First Lord's Fury, has been riveting. It is one of those series where you see the world in your mind and feel like you are experiencing the events with the characters. Whilst the editing on some of the audiobooks could have been better, it takes nothing away from the story itself.
This is one of my favourite series and is up there with the best that the fantasy genre has to offer. Jim Butcher should be proud of this work.

Five star story and reading
Sometimes an epic story like this one loses pace or focus in the mid sections. This is a pleasant exception.
Lose a star for stupod Toot-toot-a-toot fanfares destroying the drama, excitement and flow of the story.

Could Have Been Perfect, But...
I loved this series when I read the printed version, but the audio version was spoiled for me by a lacklustre performance by Kate Reading. I will admit that I'm not really a fan of Ms Reading as a narrator, but I really wanted to listen to this series. With her plummy English accent she mispronounced the name of the main character, and several others, and each time she did it was like being jabbed with a pin. Very annoying. The name TAVI was pronounced TARVI, and the CANIM became CARNIM. That being said, the fantastic story carried the day, and I will be keeping this wonderful series despite the less than wonderful narrator. In my humble opinion, this series should have been read by a male narrator, someone like Rupert Degas, or Andrew Wincott, if an English accent was so desired. I think Nick Podehl would have made this series a magical experience, but we'll never know.
