About this listen

Robert, Anthea, Jane, Cyril and the Lamb are on holiday at the White House, a beautiful place on the edge of a hill with a chalk quarry one side and a gravel-pit on the other. Before they have even been there a week, they make an amazing discovery. Digging in the gravel-pit, they find a fairy! The Psammead is brown, furry, fat and shaped like a spider- as well as being very old, and very grumpy. But most importantly, the creature can grant wishes, and the children are soon having the most wonderful adventures...

An abridged reading by Lynda Bellingham of E. Nesbit's classic tale.

Absolutely loved it and really enjoyed it. Absolutely Brilliant. Absolutely fantastic. Very good. I hope the next one is just as good as this one.

It was good but yes it was all so unfair to native Americans but apart apart from that quite good

Good

What a delight this story is for young and old alike. No political points to be made as seem to proliferate in modern children's stories, just a lovely, good old fashioned story that any child would enjoy. Beautifully read by the equally lovely Linda Bellingham.

Wonderful!

Great storytelling narrator sounds like she has had too much to drink and smoke and shouting

Love it

Good but scary

The performance was a bit croaky
and I didn't really understand some of the words , that's why I rated it like that. Darragh, age 9.

Quite good

A great children's story. Short and imaginative. And I need 15 words to say thus.

Very nice

It’s a pity that the text is abridged and adapted for the modern child. When I was little, I loved the old-fashioned references and as an adult (not having read it since I was seven), I vividly remember all the comments that have been missed out. This is well read, albeit slightly patronising in tone.

Delightful classic

The only boy that hasn’t time traveled well is the ‘Red Indians’ wish - the native Americans are depicted as fighting savages before disappearing. Otherwise, this is perfect.

My daughter loved this
