Summary
Something’s definitely fishy about this case….
On my last stakeout for Quest Investigations, I nearly got clotheslined by a grove of angry dryads. I expected my bosses to reprimand me, but instead they handed me my first solo assignment. Me! Matt Steinitz, the only human on the Quest roster!
Okay, so the mission isn’t exactly demanding. Obviously, the bosses wanted to give me something they think I can’t screw up. I’m determined to show them what I can do, however, so I dive right in with no complaints.
At first glance, it looks as simple as baiting a hook: A selkie’s almost-ex-husband is vandalizing his boat with unwanted deliveries of deceased sea life. All I have to do is document the scene, tell the ex to cease and desist, and present the bill for property damages. Boom. Mission accomplished, another Quest success, and as a bonus, I get to keep my job.
But then things get…complicated. Suspicious undercurrents muddy up my oh-so-easy case. Nothing is as clear as it should be. And the biggest complication? My inappropriate attraction to the client, who may not be as blameless as he claims.
Turns out those dead herrings aren’t the only things that stink about this situation.
Dammit.
Five Dead Herrings is the first in the Quest Investigations M/M paranormal mystery series, a spinoff of E.J. Russell’s Mythmatched paranormal rom-com story world. It contains no on-page sex or violence, and although there is a romantic subplot, it is not a romance.

A great start to a new series.
I've decided, I need more of these books by EJ Russell in my life, I've listened to a few but I need to now look at the back catalogues.
The world building is beyond good, the character development is so detailed. Each series is unique and the stories keep you tuned in from start to finish. I binge listen these books and I can't help it.
This doesn't have a HEA as its not actually a romance, its funny, heartfelt, slightly odd and has a lot of magical mischief and death. So we get a bit of everything and its addictive. I need book 2 now. Well worth the read/listen. Its the type of series you can go back to many times.
Greg Boudreaux does an amazing job narrating as normal. However, like I normally do, I sped up to 1.10 in audible.

New adventures in a well loved universe!
World building is a skill E.J. Russell has in spades. Another skill of hers that I admire, is her ability to come at that world from all angles, building and deepening it as she goes, while keeping her readers (and listeners) entertained, amased and wanting more. Here she does it again, this time bringing in characters from previous books to start an investigation series, and introducing new, interesting characters.
I am not in love with her introductory use of "Did you notice my thought there, dear reader?", but that, fortunately, doesn't last long. And then it is full speed ahead! I enjoyed myself immensely, and hope to see book 2 in the series soon!

Had to get the audio because of Greg Boudreaux!
I already read the 4 books in the series. But when I saw who the narrator was I had to save up my credits and wait till all 4 were released so I can binge listen. Greg Boudreaux is fantastic and he really made the characters come to life. Yes each audiobook is pretty short, only 4 - 5 hours each. But it's Greg Boudreaux!

paranormal investigation
Reading the blurbs for the rest of the series will tell you that the romantic sub-plot will stay that way, a sub-plot for a long time, and I love that.
Gimme all the different species, the convoluted mysteries narrated perfectly by Greg Boudreaux. Seriously, I'll listen to him all day and not get bored.
This is a spin off from the Mismatched Mates series but I think it's possible to listen without having read/listened to those, though fuller enjoyment comes from having done so.
Matt/Hugh (the nickname is funny) is human in a paranormal world and is so relatable that I'm looking forward to his next adventure

So Clever! G. Boudreaux is Amazing!
E.J. Russell kills me with their endless creativity! Five Dead Herrings is amazing. Snarky, and witty, and 100% enjoyable.
The world Russell has created here is so clever, and these characters are completely unique. I love having the main character be a human... everything he sees, his take on all the things he discovers, is wonderful.
And if you really want to enjoy Five Dead Herrings, do it in audio! Greg Boudreaux's performance is simply marvelous. Five Huge Stars!
After all, what could be more alluring than an American doing a Scots accent? Literally nothing lol. Seriously, Mr. Boudreaux's range of accents and voices always blows me away, and E.J. Russell has created an astonishing array of characters. But Greg Boudreaux hasn't missed a single thing here. Bravo!

Perfect audio!
Boudreaux was absolutely the narrator for the job with this book! The accents were amazing, and each character was distinct and brought to life in amazing ways. Can’t wait to see how the rest sound!
Book review:
I didn't realize how much I missed the Mythmatched universe until starting this series, but I am so pumped that Russell has started a new series in this magical, fun, and amazing world. Matt, or Hugh depending on who you ask, stole my heart in Vampire with Benefits and he continued to do so here. He's the only human in a world full of supes, still in love with Ted, and just trying to find where he belongs. Along the way he also has to solve the mystery of the dead herrings, deal with the fact that the dryads seem to have a vendetta against him, and try not to fall in love with the wrong person, the ever dashing selkie would-be-king Lachlan. If you're looking for a book with magic, an engaging series, fabulous characters, and what is shaping up to be a very good slow-burn romance, this is the book for you. I honestly cannot wait for the next book!

Loved the book, the audio is even better.
Another great story from Ms Russell. so much fun. This is an off shoot of the Mythmatched series, which I loved. If you've read that you'll remember Matt/Hugh, this is his story. And there's Jordan, the young werewolf, who made me howl (sorry, couldn't resist) with laughter in Howling on Hold. Its a fun paranormal mystery, and the beginning of a new series. It's a fun, quirky story, well written, with great world building. I really enjoyed this audio version. Greg Boudreux does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life. His Scottish accent is brilliant.
