About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A propulsive, hypnotic novel about a man who is unravelled by a series of events beyond his grasp.

Fifteen-year-old István lives with his mother in a quiet apartment complex in Hungary. New to the town and shy, he is unfamiliar with the social rituals at school and soon becomes isolated, with his neighbour – a married woman close to his mother’s age – as his only companion. These encounters shift into a clandestine relationship that István himself can barely understand, and his life soon spirals out of control.

As the years pass, he is carried gradually upwards on the currents of the twenty-first century’s tides of money and power, moving from the army to the company of London’s super-rich, with his own competing impulses for love, intimacy, status and wealth winning him unimaginable riches, until they threaten to undo him completely.

Spare and penetrating, Flesh is the finest novel yet by a master of realism, asking profound questions about what drives a life: what makes it worth living, and what breaks it.

I wasn't sure who to root for, and the writing was very simple , and at times the plot seemed to be going nowhere . but somehow it worked.

simple writing but deep

Fabulous story. Could not stop listening once started. So good I immediately bought another book on audible by the author and another too by the narrator. This was a great find that I pre-ordered too on a whim.

Great character development and great narration.

I love David Szalay’s writing and story-telling style and this is no exception. Literary page turners are hard to pull off but he does this in great style again with Flesh. Fans of Stanley Kubrick will recognise in Istvan’s tale a clever modern retelling of the story of Thackeray’s Barry Lyndon. The Audible narrator is perfect too.

A great read and listen

Deeply moving account of a man’s life… Hungarian Istvan, whose fate pivots on an event that happens when he is fifteen. The spare, measured prose gives this story a heft and power which is remarkable. Excellent read by the narrator who delivers it with the same nonjudgmental tone it deserves: dispassionate yet compassionate at the same time. A definite recommend.

Life as it could be

Asks questions about the importance of the body over the mind. Clever and sharply observed.

Stark, clear prose.

So realistic and true to life. We watch a whole lifetime play out in front of us, with the main protagonist making very few decisions for himself, just being buffeted about by events and circumstances. Being the mother of three adult sons, I recognised instantly the reticent, monosyllabic communication style of the young Istvan and watched him evolve into a loving father - just trying to make the right decisions for his little son. I was touched by the relationship between Istvan and his wife, as I was by the relationship between the adult Istvan and his mother. All of these came across as completely believable. I had to laugh at one of the few-ish laugh-out-loud moments: Istvan, being a central European, stated in passing that 24 degrees centigrade is not "swimming pool weather". An English person would be complaining of unbearable heat in 24 degrees!

And, by the way, the narration is perfect.

So true to life

Absolutely love this book. Each character’s portrayal is so unique and true to life. Thumbs up.

I gave up listening, as I didn't want to hear one more exchange along the lines of ' What's it like?', reply 'It's OK.', followed by 'What do you mean?' and 'It's OK.', end of conversation. The food choices on various restaurants were given more attention than the motivations of the characters.

Stark dialogue, story became less interesting as it went on.
