Summary

Do you know where your shoes come from?

Do you know where they go when you're done with them?

In 2018, 66.3 million pairs of shoes were manufactured across the world every single day. They have never been cheaper to buy, and we have never been more convinced that we need to buy them. Yet their cost to the planet has never been greater.

In this urgent, passionately argued book, Tansy E. Hoskins opens our eyes to the dark origins of the shoes on our feet. Taking us deep into the heart of an industry that is exploiting workers and deceiving consumers, we begin to understand that if we don't act fast, this humble household object will take us to the point of no return.

Designers should read this

I think this is a very important book, especially now as brands release their sustainability goals and practices. There are many insights. Chapters are well structured. Some chapters maybe of particular interest to some so is it possible to jump to chapters that are of interest without losing out. But worth listening to the entire book.

If you wear shoes- listen immediately!

Hoskins' book is both well-written and completely eye opening. I have the ebook as well, but the audio book is brilliant for listening with others and discussing- and you will want to talk about it!

I regularly describe the experience of reading/listening to Hoskins' previous book - 'Stitched up- The Anticapitalist Book of Fashion' - as akin to being 'unplugged from the matrix'. This book is no different.

As someone who would have described themselves as relatively knowledgeable about the negative impacts of the fashion industry on people and planet, I had never really thought about the shoe industry in particular. In fact, no one ever really talks about it, and there certainly aren't any other books that deal with this that I've ever found.

Hoskins has shone a spotlight on some very dark dealings that we have all successfully managed to hide our faces from, and in doing so has opened up a conversation that we should have been having for years.

The book delivers hard-hitting and difficult truths in a way that isn't overbearing or preachy. This is meticulously researched and presents political and economic concepts in a really accessible and clear way, but Hoskins is also a storyteller. I particularly enjoyed her description of chatting with trainer enthusiasts at a convention in London- a fascinating insight into a world I know nothing of.

I have reread/listened to Hoskins previous work many times- and Footwork will be no different.

One more thing- the choice of narrator for audio books often can take the shine off my enjoyment- I have had some great books ruined by a monotone narrators voice! I'm happy to report that this is narrated really well 👌

A must read

This book will make you feel terrible but also educate you beyond relief. You will think more about your consumption after reading this. So many good facts. Sounds like she really did her research.
