Summary

Set against four tumultuous decades of American history, For Richer, for Poorer is a spellbinding saga of betrayal and love...and one woman’s quest for revenge. The day a brutal massacre turns Bartonville into a battlefield, Kitty is living with her father in a shack owned by the town’s most powerful family. When the bloodshed is over, the boy Kitty loves lies fatally wounded. But their child will live on. And Tyrone Duncannon’s death will be avenged.

For Richer, for Poorer is the story of Kitty Kellogg Stokes, born into a hardscrabble life in small-town Pennsylvania, who rose to become the most influential woman in the political circles of New York and Washington, DC. When Kitty marries John Stokes, Jr., she bears him two sons. So begins a deception that will continue for decades and test the limits of a woman’s desire for revenge - and a mother’s love.

the narrator's voice

The narrator's voice spoilt the hours of listening. Poor choice (in my opinion) because of the harsh, almost strained, delivery.

Excellent story perfectly narrated highly recommended

I came across the book by chance and after listening to the sample, I was drawn into the story and just had too have more.
Joyce Feurring should be nominated for her narration, she was so enticing in the way her intonation draws you into the next chapters, one after the other, I just couldn’t put it down.
An absolutely brilliant story of revenge that travels in the not so obvious path. You can work a little out at the very end but it’s just perfect for this book. Overall the literary standard excellent, without cliches and predictable text. It’s dialogue helps you to paint the pictures in your own mind without being overly descriptive, so there’s room for your imagination.
An excellent read!!

Never a dull moment!

I rarely find a female narrator that I find vocally satisfying not to mention skilled in characterization.... This one was first class, convincingly dramatizing all parts and keeping a gripping story moving from chapter to fascinating chapter, making an intricate story thoroughly enjoyable!!

A good book……

It’s not as long as it seems as a number of chapters are repeated which is a shame. The story held my attention and the narrator is very good too.

Tedious

On and on and on it goes. Was I supposed to care about these characters and their lives? I just didn't. Not even slightly.
The writing was so bad in places. Particularly any "emotional" scenes. They just read as cheesy, trite cliches to me. The motivations of the different characters were often unclear. And their personalities and behaviours seemed to be molded to fit the story at any given moment if it required them to be so.

The narrator was just *awful* imo. I didn't realize that the main character was supposed to be Irish until it mentioned it. Until then I had been really irritated by it, mostly because I found it really hard to understand what she was saying. Then when I realized that it was supposed to be an Irish accent I got even more annoyed because how tf is that an Irish accent?!
I mean whenever I'm in Kerry, I do find it hard to understand some of the locals with a thick regional accent, but it sounds *nothing* like whatever this woman tried to do!
It wasn't just the Irish accent that was atrocious either - every accent was bad. Plus she clearly got mixed up with who was supposed to sound like what an awful lot and didn't remain consistent at all.

What a waste of time

Gave up a third of the way through. Long winded, unbelievable and going nowhere. The Irish accent was grating and characters two dimensional
