About this listen
Polly Longden's china-doll looks belie a strong and fiery personality. When typhoid strikes her home city of Lincoln, she needs every ounce of that strength in order to cope. With the death of her mother, 13-year-old Polly has to give up her ambition of becoming a teacher to care for her family. When their father, too, falls victim to the typhoid, his only hope is to go to hospital, leaving Polly to cope alone.
Thankfully she has the support of her neighbours: Bertha Halliday and her son, Leo, a young policeman. Through all the hardships that follow, Polly is sustained by her dream of becoming Leo's wife. But her father's hot temper leads him to the wrong side of the law during the railway riots of 1911, forcing Leo to take drastic action that Polly will surely never be able to forgive and forget....

Margaret Dickinson never fails,
Yet another, engaging, beautifully narrated audible book, written by Margaret Dickinson. So engaging and, as always, was so sorry when it finished.

The bonds of family
A little tough at the beginning because of the sad initial storyline, but once involved with the characters it has a good flow. I liked the main characters especially Polly & Stevie.
Anne Dover is my favourite narrator and brings the people to life.

Oh how I loved this book. It captivated me throughout. I’d highly recommend it. So far this is the best Margaret Dickinson book I’ve read. Beautifully narrated by Anne Dover.

ok ish
I don't get the good reviews on this book, 3 quarters of it is boring, I skipped a few chapters because it was so repetative, and I could still follow the story. Polly was in danger of being turned into a saint ! I would not recommend.
