About this listen

Fräulein Schmidt and Mr. Anstruther is a novella written by Elizabeth von Arnim, a British-German author known for her witty and insightful novels. Published in 1907, the story revolves around the correspondence between two main characters, Fräulein Rose-Marie Schmidt, a spinster in her late 30s, and Mr. Henry Anstruther, a kind and sympathetic stranger, as they navigate their lives and explore their feelings for each other. Through the medium of letters, von Arnim captures their vulnerability and longing, providing a poignant reflection on the nature of love, loneliness and the power of written communication.

Perfect performance

Loved it. Von Arnim never fails, and this one is particularly good. I don't know why it's not up with her better known books.
But I'm leaving a review because I felt the reading performance by Lucy Scott was so brilliant. I am not someone who pays much mind to whether an audiobook narration is exactly what I want, especially if the book is good anyway. But Lucy Scott showed such beautiful range in inhabiting the character across her year of letters (which, by the way, she is twenty-six for, not a late thirties spinster!). Her tone, and self-assuredness, change so widely over this time and it's handled so well I'd recommend the audiobook over the real thing even to someone who doesn't usually like audiobooks. Try it, it's wonderful.
