Lennard Davis, author and head of the English department at University of Illinois at Chicago, on this archival edition of Fresh Air. Davis talks about his experiences, growing up a hearing child with deaf parents. He had a complex and sometimes difficult relationship with his deaf, working-class Jewish immigrant parents. It's the subject of his memoir My Sense of Silence. He has written several books and published essays in The Nation, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and other publications.
