Summary

The New York Times best-selling author of Otherwise Engaged and The Mystery Woman presents an all-new novel of intrigue and murder set against the backdrop of Victorian London.

The Kern Secretarial Agency provides reliable professional services to its wealthy clientele, and Anne Clifton was one of the finest women in Ursula Kern's employ. But Miss Clifton has met an untimely end - and Ursula is convinced it was not due to natural causes.

Archaeologist and adventurer Slater Roxton thinks Mrs. Kern is off her head to meddle in such dangerous business. Nevertheless, he seems sensible enough to Ursula, though she does find herself unnerved by his self-possession and unreadable green-gold eyes. If this mysterious widowed beauty insists on stirring the pot, Slater intends to remain close by as they venture into the dark side of polite society.

Together they must reveal the identity of a killer - and to achieve their goal they may need to reveal their deepest secrets to each other as well.

Good light-hearted Victorian Detective story

Good narration, good interesting story, strong characters, some humour. Light hearted Victorian set detective story.

A bit slow at the beginning…

Things dragged on a bit at the beginning. I wondered if I wanted to keep going. But the story came together at the end.

The narrator Louisa Jane Underwood was great as usual.

Appalling narration did for me!

I am afraid I can’t comment on the story because I am jumping ship. The narration is so poor that I can’t stand to listen to any more of it.

The narrator has an appalling English accent (if a story is set in England then for goodness sake use an English narrator), but all of her accents are very poor. Mattie’s character roves wildly between Irish, Welsh and a very unrealistic Scottish accent. The main character has a patently fake and overdone upper class English accent, and the male voices are, at best, comical.

If a narrator doesn’t understand how to pronounce a word then why on earth don’t they find out. If you can’t pronounce mausoleum then please investigate rather than give it the most ridiculous pronunciation imaginable. Same with status, and many other words. Shocking mangling of the English language.

Steering clear of any audiobooks read by this narrator. She lets the side down terribly.
