A delightful discussion of gender and joy
Kate delivers a wonderful exploration of gender and its nuances. At times entertaining, soulful, painful and beautiful, there is never a dull moment. I found Kate to be an incredibly charismatic writer and narrator, her wit and charm manifesting in the way she sees the world and the people she includes in a conversation about gender, without the binary. The updated version brings modern influences and influencers, a valuable addition.

Incredible generosity of insight
Kate was very much before their time in writing the original version of this so many years ago. The writing is inclusive and authentic, opening up a topic that for many of us is something we’ve taken for granted and not questioned in terms of how we live our own lives. I have come away from the book with a new comfort in understanding myself and seeing how the system of binary gender holds people back, including those who are confidently cis gender. The lack of unnecessary polemics which I find are quite common in books by other writers speaking about gender and transition really helped me to connect with new topics and new ways of thinking without being made to feel an outsider. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the battleground that is gender and how it is holding society back.

Goes on a bit
She raises some good points and interesting opinions, but there are times when she gets very close to things that terfs would say, and, no offence intended but it does start to yet quite babbly and repetitive. I ended up leaving it on in the background just to get through it (it's relatively long). If you're a fan of Kate's work then you'll probably enjoy it more, but I had never heard of her before and was more interested in what she had to say about gender, which could probably have been summed up in one or two chapters! x) Including readings of some plays towards the end was a really nice addition, although with the audiobook version it was difficult to follow which bits were lines of the play and which were her added commentary. If you get bored, you could skip to these!
