About this listen

An epic saga of love, fate and betrayal.

Victoria has chosen career over love, but starts to question this decision when she finds herself working at a remote weather research station on a tiny island off the coast of Norway.

In this world of midnight sunshine, the Old Gods still watch the affairs of humanity - one of them has become fixated on Victoria, certain that she is the reincarnation of a woman he fell in love with over a thousand years before. It was a love affair which threatened the very existence of Asgard.

Dangerous love and desire are soon running out of control, as the spectacularly supernatural obliterates Victoria's refuge in scientific rationalism.

Editor reviews

Having established itself as a landmark of contemporary fantasy, Giants of the Frost finds itself a worthy suitor in the haunting strains of performer Edwina Wren - at once forceful and sensuous. After settling in at a remote Norwegian research station, scientist Victoria Scott soon begins to suffer an uncanny sense of déjà vu, followed by nightmarish visions. The source of these disturbances is steeped in centuries-old Pagan religion - its divine workings beyond the grasp of Victoria’s scientific sensibilities.

Wren’s voice-acting style is refreshingly unique and strikingly convincing, as she personifies stuffy Norwegian scientists, coarse yet mystical deities, and the incredulous heroine, chased by ancient demigods. Moreover, Wren’s lilting, ethereal airs heighten the chilling atmospherics and ancient echoes that haunt this tale at every turn.

Critic reviews

"A page-turning supernatural romance/dark fantasy novel with lashings of brooding Norse mythology." (The Age)
"Beautifully rendered....Quite possibly her finest work yet." (The Courier Mail)

Fabulous!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a fantastic tale of love and fate, with very believable characters brought to life by the narrator who uses many different voices and accents. I found this book whilst searching for more from this narrator, having heard other books of hers and in doing so discovered an author who I shall definitely keep an eye on.

Great narration good story, terrible ending

If you could sum up Giants of the Frost in three words, what would they be?

Enjoyable, untimely disappointing....

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the story and the narration was excellent but it ended as if the author lost interest at the last minute, very disappointing.
But if you can forgive a rubbish ending then its worth a listen. Shripy was awesome and he will stay with me forever

Well.......

Worth a listen but make up your own mind by the end of the book, not a bad story just not to my taste.

unfulfilling

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

undecided

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Shorter... it was unnecessarily drawn out in places, far too meandering.

And **SPOILER ALERT*** I found the ending miserable, depressing & unsatisfying, it ruined it for me.

What does Edwina Wren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Great accent & characterisation

If this book were a film would you go see it?

maybe, I think knowing the ending in advance would make the story more enjoyable in this case. I've never read a fantasy with such a miserable ending before & it grated against what I was expecting & I actually felt quite cross! I read fantasy to escape the **** in my own life, I don't need stories to depress me further. But if I knew what I was getting into then it's different. I think it would make an excellent adaptation, particularly with the renewed interested in Norse mythology of late.

Great story

My wife and I listend to this together. We both found it a compelling story, well told. We kept finding excuses to listen just a bit longer because we didn't want to stop listening. The washing up became a chore of choice because you can listen and wash up...

Good narration, reasonable range of voices, great story concept.

Beautiful and Haunting

I loved this book. The narrator is fabulous making you feel like you are listening to many different voices rather than just one. This draws you into the story making it very intimate.

Imaginative but not the right ending

I thought this was a clever plot and kept me interested throughout, but I wish the ending was different!
