This is Britain as you've never heard it.
This is Britain as it has never been told.
From Newcastle to Cornwall, from the birth of the 20th century to the teens of the 21st, Girl, Woman, Other follows a cast of 12 characters on their personal journeys through this country and the last hundred years. They're each looking for something - a shared past, an unexpected future, a place to call home, somewhere to fit in, a lover, a missed mother, a lost father, even just a touch of hope....

"The actress Anna-Maria Nabirye projects the characters superbly: she has a full, low timbre and a powerful directness." (The Times)
"Masterful...A choral love song to black womanhood in modern Great Britain." (Elle)
"Ambitious, flowing and all-encompassing, an offbeat narrative that'll leave your mind in an invigorated whirl...[It] unites poetry, social history, women's voices and beyond." (Stylist)

An excellent performance chronicling many lives
In my opinion the choice of narrator was an inspired one. I've heard that the book itself is a challenging and unusual read with regard to the punctuation (or lack thereof) but you wouldn't know that from listening to Anna-Maria's expression of the source material she had to work with. Considering how many varied characters the narrator had to work with, she did an excellent job. The story itself was lovely, with the many aspects of womanhood that it portrays. In honesty, this isn't a single story but many that encompass all generations, backgrounds, genders, racial groups - with positive emphasis on black women - and sexual identities. The accounts are candid, each woman, girl, other, is strong in her or their own right, each person matters, and no account is more or less valid than any other. An excellent book and audiobook overall.

Great book terrible narrator
The book itself was good but the narrator mispronounced or tripped over so many words at times I had to rewind to work out what she was saying. It massively impacted the storytelling

Enjoyable and powerful at times
I did really love it but there are so many characters with intertwining plots made it hard to keep up.

Wonderful!
I loved the beautiful, earthy descriptions. I loved the vivid metaphors. I loved the characters. I feel like I have gotten to know so many different women - women that I would never have known in real life. I am impressed by the authors ability to get into the heads of so many different people. How? Does she know all these people? She describes their feelings so well. Also love all the little perceptive observations. Thoughts or feelings that I have had, but dismissed, as me being silly. Like feeling awkward when going to an African event with white friends, and feeling the need to "explain" it to them, even if it was completely unconnected to me.
It's a great book!

Wonderful
Great story. Enjoyed getting to know the characters. Beautifully read.
My only complaint is that there was no pause between the final word of the story and the narrator launching into the speech about copyright etc. Spoilt the final moment for me.

Brilliant
This is fantastic book that is very different to my usual choices but very worthwhile. It covers so many angles of feminism, sexuality and race.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot

Oranges meets Caged Bird
I stopped in the car, twice, to cry. l laughed out loud. I thought a lot and argued with myself. I told a lot of people to read it. As a 50 something father I was made to challenge much of my conscious life.
