About this listen

Being immortal isn't all it's cracked up to be. Life's hard for a Greek god in the 21st century: Nobody believes in you any more, even your own family doesn't respect you, and you're stuck in a dilapidated hovel in North London with too many siblings and not enough hot water.

But for Artemis (goddess of hunting, professional dog walker), Aphrodite (goddess of beauty, telephone sex operator) and Apollo (god of the sun, TV psychic) there's no way out....Until a meek cleaner and her would-be boyfriend come into their lives and turn the world literally upside down.

Critic reviews

"Witty and entertaining, Gods Behaving Badly is an auspicious debut that outrageously libels the classical pantheon." ( Financial Times)

I read Gods Behaving Badly when it came out in 2008 and loved it.
I've just listened to it on audiobook and loved it just as much. The humour is brilliant. I laughed out loud so many times and was again absorbed by the brilliant plot and characters.
Glen McCready narrated it perfectly too – great comic timing and easily distinguishable voices.
I'm sad it's finished, but very happy to see that Marie Phillips has some other books, which I'll be reading next. Can you get those on audiobook too please?!

Brilliantly witty and fun

I am only part way through this book, but felt that it was enough to write a review.

From the short summary of the book it sounded great, witty, cheeky and bad. I felt the book could have been better. The narrator gives the Gods a sarcastic, superior, smug voice you would expect from any God. The book is in need of this and it is not a criticism. The love story is passable but the book on the whole leaves you flat.

Perhaps I will change my mind. Watch this space.

I havn't actually listened to the audio version of this so i cannot comment on that aspect.
I have however read the book and i loved it! I thought it was brilliantly written and hilariously funny with a very witty storyline! It has got alot of sexual references so if your easily offended by that sort of thing then it probably isn't for you but overall a great read - or listen :D

Great Book :)

I suppose the problem I have with this is that I feel like I have read this book before? I mean I can't say that definitely. But it feels like it.

Love the satire, not sure about the story.

this listen kept me well entertained on my long morning commute. not overly deep in terms of thoughtful plot which can make a nice change when you don't want to fully concentrate on a story which required a lot of concentration to analyse the plot. this one is so simple on the surface that there is almost no depthness involved which I loved. I read the book itself a few years back and the narrator had such a pleasant voice when narrating and very funny when impersonating the characters it was very entertaining . I have recommended this book time and time again in the past and I will continue to do so but now also in audiobook form.

sinfully delightful

I bought this principally on the strength of having previously listened to the wonderful "Penguins Stopped Play" read by the same narrator. Not a very scientific choice you might reasonably say but both were comic books and both were generally very well reviewed.
I lived to regret the decision and the waste of several hours that I will never get back. The story line is hackneyed, the dialogue puerile and the ending utterly predictable.
If you would like a funny book involving Gods and humans then I would suggest "Anansi Boys" read by the inestimable Lenny Henry. Alternatively if you are looking for whimsy then there is a brilliant full cast audio version of "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" floating around. For farce and some scathing social commentary you could do a lot worse than one of Marina Lewycka's books or, if you are not troubled by laughing in public, the aforementioned "Penguins Stopped Play" - the funniest and saddest book I have come across since Catch 22. Whatever else you do, don't waste a credit on this nonsense!

A Great Voice does not a good audiobook make

loved the book, disappointed by the reading, never heard several of the names pronounced that way which really stole a lot of enjoyment for me *hear'a, ear'os, he'feastus. like nails on a chalk board ruining a story I once enjoyed*

maybe if someone else could read it?

I had such high hopes for this book, but quite frankly it was boring, tried to shock but it fell flat and just seemed like a rehash and jumble of other books.

Very disappointed.

The very definition of derivative
