Golem is an engaging novel set in the glamorous 1950s, focusing on the evil taking roots into humanity, exploiting humans’ vulnerabilities and vanities. In addition, the reader can also appreciate the focus on the divide between the rich and the poor and how envy and status’ thirst can pave the way to evil.
I loved the characterisation in this novel, never shallow, but always layered, so that the reader never really knows a character fully. Golem is obviously the focal point and the character the other protagonists revolve around, true evil incarnate, or is he?
Whilst John, Alena and Annette try to live their lives as best they can, they each have their encounters with Golem and I would say fall in his trap, but I actually think that they are their own fate masters and events happened that way because of their choices, one way or another. But again, things are not so easily defined and that’s why the Devil is in the details!
I loved the cosmogony or theogony, depending on how we look at it and I also enjoyed Golem’s speeches which I found thought provoking! I also loved the author’s explanation of the origin of the book, based on some true facts.
If you’re a fan of supernatural psychological horror I think you’ll want to meet Golem and lose yourself in this tale of evil and horrific rituals.
