About this listen

A perfect blend of medical drama and spiritual insight, Gray Matter is a fascinating account of Dr. David Levy's decision to begin asking his patients if he could pray for them before surgery. Some are thrilled. Some are skeptical. Some are hostile, and some are quite literally transformed by the request.

Each chapter focuses on a specific case, opening with a detailed description of the patient's diagnosis and the procedure that will need to be performed, followed by the prayer request. From there, listeners follow as Dr. Levy performs the operation, and then we wait - right alongside Dr. Levy, the patients, and their families - to see the final results.

Dr. Levy's musings on what successful and unsuccessful surgical results imply about God, faith, and the power of prayer are honest and insightful. As we see him come to his ultimate conclusion that, no matter what the results of the procedure are, "God is good," we cannot help but be truly moved and inspired.

Amazing

I felt very encouraged to not be too comfortable to separate my Christian life from my secular work. God is interested in all areas of our lives. He yearns for His glory to be seen in the lives of every day people.

Excellent excellent excellent!

A brilliantly honest and deeply encouraging story of faith and compassion alongside incredibly competent medical skill. The power of forgiveness is so rarely presented in any form, but to hear these true stories of forgiveness offered and received are profoundly moving.

Encouraged

Reminded of the power of prayer. Not placing our professional skill or ability on a pedistal. But humbly honoring God with our skill since he has given it to us. This book is a practical testimony of how a small prayer can have everlasting effects.

Interesting and honest

Dr Levy has not been afraid to share the struggles faced by every Christian when living their faith. The medical explanations of brain surgery procedures are respectfully presented for laymen. I found encouragement for my own Christian life and witnessing.

Fantastic read/listen

This book will stay with me for a long time. It impacted my thinking greatly on the mind/body connection and how stress and unforgiveness has an impact on our physical health. I wish there were more Drs like Dr Levy who care for their patient's physical, spiritual and emotional wellbeing. A first class read 💙

Thoroughly enjoyed this book

Both a medical and spiritual text. To understand how faith and medicine work hand in hand from someone of Dr Levy’s standing is a privilege. It’s a great example for all of us on how we can use our gifts through our vocations to help others. The explanation of how to seek and also give forgiveness was particularly helpful. ThankYou!

A wonderful example of how to use medicine as ministry

I recently graduated medical school and will be starting residency later this year. I’m a Christian and would like to be able to minister to patients through my medical practice and this book is a testament to the fact that faith and medicine do not have to be separate. It’s a must read for every Christian physician!!!
