Den unge nyuddannede jordemoder Hillevi Klarin ankommer i foråret 1916 til den nordsvenske landsby Röbäck ved Svartvattnet, et fattigt og isoleret udsted. Det bliver et hårdt møde mellem Hillevis idealistiske gåpåmod og landsbyens kristelige moralisme, store klasseforskelle og forbenede fordomme. Men det bliver også starten på en usædvanlig kærlighedshistorie, da jægeren Trond forærer Hillevi skindet af en friskflået ulv.
Guds barmhjertighed er første del af trilogien Ulveskindet.
Indlæst af Puk Schaufuss, som er uddannet fra Det Kongelige Teaters Elevskole i 1965. Hun har medvirket i forestillinger på de største danske teatre og haft roller i film som De røde heste og 'Kun en pige' samt tv-serien Nikolaj og Julie.
