Summary

Jane Lawless is a woman at a crossroads - her lover has left, she has finally recovered from a vicious attack sustained last year, and the holidays are closing in. With no one to help her ring in the new year, Jane reluctantly agrees to accompany her good friend Cordelia Thorn on a peculiar holiday trip: Cordelia's estranged sister, Broadway star Octavia Thorn, has asked them to attend her wedding.

Octavia getting married is no surprise - she's done it three times before - but her candidate for hubby #4 certainly is. Roland Lester is a reclusive 83-year-old retired Hollywood director, a relic from the golden age of Tinseltown with a controversial past. No one can understand how the two met, much less fell in love. When the bodies start to drop, Jane realizes it might not be love at all that brought the young diva and the aged director together, but something much deeper, and perhaps more sinister.

Delving deep into film history, Jane finds unsettling connections between Roland and a murder that was never solved. Finding out what happened 40 years ago could be the key to unlock the mystery of Octavia's curious marriage, but laying bare such long-buried secrets also promises grave consequences for everyone involved.

Narration

Good overall story, but narration made it hard to listen to. Different narrator would make this a really good listen

Wrong synopsis, but good first book of the series!

At first I found the narration slightly stilted, but after a while it grows on you! Hallowed Murder is in fact set around the college students in a sorority house. (Though the synopsis for the other story sounds great!) Definitely a solid first book, and leaves you eager to read the next one!

Wrong summary but good book

Here is the correct summary of the book:

t’s almost winter in Minnesota. As the icy cold begins to grip the Twin Cities, restaurant owner, Jane Lawless, and her eccentric sidekick, Cordelia Thorn, are caught up in a spiraling chain of events centering on the university sorority, Kappa Alpha Sigma. Allison Lord, a popular sorority member with a secret, is killed and the murderer continues to stalk the house amid charges of theft, lesbianism and religious intolerance.

Not the best narrator but a good enough mystery as it keeps you guessing. A bit Agatha Christie with a lesbian lead because who the hell trusts someone that much with their secrets (except the closeted ones) after 5 minutes?

great murder mystery

this book is really well written although I wish that books that have anything considered triggering would have a warning so here's mine for anyone that needs it, this story has a description of rape, it isn't very detailed but enough so that I found it hard to listen to.
The homophobia and religious fanaticism is written well and unfortunately all too often still happening in the world so I liked that this book is calling it out.

The outline did not reflect the content!

I was anticipating a storyline about nefarious wedding shenanigans and veteran film stars, but instead got something about a Sorority murder. Listened to 5 chapters but still nothing relating to the outline given. Disappointed and confused.

pretty bad narration and story was unbelievable

the reader made no atempts whatsoever to differ her voice for the different characters. and she read everything, even sad or scary things as cheerfully as everything else. hard to get the tone set for the different scenes. also, whenever there was a new chapter, she would make no pause, so the changes of characters, time and place is confusing.
The story is not a lot better. everyone reacted as murder and death of friends and family was a daily occurrence, and the police work was very odd later in the book.
