About this listen
Nicky Henson reads this hilarious new comedy from the bestselling author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
The irrepressible Russell "Buffy" Buffery has upped sticks from London and moved to Knockton, Powys, to a B&B inherited from an old flame. With his future spread before him, and a string of failed marriages behind him, Buffy decides it's time for a new challenge.
Meanwhile: Harold's wife has run off with a younger woman leaving him alone with his as-yet-unwritten novel narrated by Mary Pickford's cat; Amy's weedy boyfriend has turned out to be not so needy after all; and Andy's partner's corset-and-suspender-clad attempts at seduction are having anything but the desired effect. They're all lost with nowhere to go, and feeling well past their sell-by dates. So they decide to enrol on "Courses for Divorces" in a sleepy rural town. Under Buffy's tutelage, they find themselves relearning all those skills they never thought they'd need again, and a whole lot more besides.

I never felt that the story actually got off the ground.
I didn't particularly enjoy Nicky Henson as the narrator either although his voice is probably reflective of the central character.
Entertaining but not outstanding

What made the experience of listening to Heartbreak Hotel the most enjoyable?
The cast of characters involved in the story was fantastic. I loved every one of them.Any additional comments?
This novel was an unexpected treat. It is the tale of the much-married Buffy, a 70-something retired actor who inherits a Georgian B&B house in rural Wales from an old flame. He leaves London and decides to keep running the house as a B&B and soon becomes part of the local community. One of his guests inspires him to set up a business running residential courses in practical skills for the partners of 'skilled people' who have up and left them. A cast of wonderful characters and assorted family members ( sons, daughters, ex-wives) descend on Heartbreak Hotel and learn to cope with life again, some of them getting more than they bargained for, including Buffy. This is a funny, moving novel with lots of hearty good sense and wit and lots of laughs. It kept me smiling for hours and left me wanting more.
Nicky Henson did a workmanlike job of the narration but for me it did sound a bit rushed in places. Having said that, he did bring the character of Buffy to life in a very endearing way and he did bring out the humour in the story in a very charming way.
A charming tale, full of humour and surprises
