Summary

Often described as 'the father of realism', Henrik Ibsen was a pioneer of modernist drama. He influenced playwrights as diverse as George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde, and is the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare.

Included in this collection are adaptations of his tragicomic masterpiece The Wild Duck, his complex and compelling play Rosmersholm, the epic drama Brand and the tragedy John Gabriel Borkman. Ibsen's A Doll's House is relocated to 1879 India in Tanika Gupta's Audio Drama Award-winning dramatisation, while the provocative and scandalous Ghosts is adapted by Richard Eyre, with the cast of his Olivier Award-winning Almeida Theatre production.

Also featured are vibrant dramatisations of Hedda Gabler, whose desperate heroine is trapped in a suffocating marriage; The Lady from the Sea, about a woman torn between security and passion; and An Enemy of the People, in which a whistleblower reveals an inconvenient truth and is vilified for it.

The casts of these stunning dramas include David Threlfall, Nicholas Farrell, Helen Baxendale, Indira Varma, Lesley Manville and Harriet Walter.

Excellent

I tend to think of radio productions of stage plays as second best, but actually the two I've listened to so far are excellent productions by any standard. A strange but fascinating play - Brand (Ibsen's first major success); and A Doll's House, a play I know very well. The Doll's House is an adaptation by Tanika Gupta, setting the play in 19th Century Calcutta rather than a Norwegian town. This works brilliantly. They're wonderful plays and I highly recommend this audio title. Nine full length plays for one choice is also excellent value.

Quality radio production of Ibsen's plays.

A very good introduction to Ibsen's plays in the adapted radio format, produced to BBC radio's usual high standards. A great way to familiarise yourself with Ibsen's themes and concerns. Very useful and interesting.

Some excellent BBC productions

Great to have these captured for posterity rather than looking out for them on Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra.

Some quality performances from today’s best actors, and even adaptations by great playwrights like David Eldridge.

I love Ibsen, which is why I HATED this!

Disappointed!
Furious, as every sense of the plays had all been tampered with.
I'm Norwegian and absolutely love Ibsen's portrayal of women in all of his infamous plays. That's just it... This is no where near the style of Henrik Ibsen anymore. So very disappointed!!! Do not spend money on this. Definitely not worth it!
