About this listen

Seventeen-year-old Hannah wants to spend her senior year of high school going to football games and Mardi Gras parties. She wants to drive along the oak-lined streets of Louisiana's Garden District and lie on the hot sand of Florida's beaches. She wants to spend every night making memories with her tight-knit group of friends.

The last thing she wants is to fall in love with a girl - especially when that girl is her best friend, Baker.

Hannah knows she should like Wally, the kind, earnest boy who asks her to prom. She should cheer on her friend Clay when he asks Baker to be his girlfriend. She should follow the rules of her conservative community - the rules that have been ingrained in her since she was a child.

But Hannah longs to be with Baker, who cooks macaroni and cheese with Hannah late at night, who believes in the magic of books as much as Hannah does, and who challenges Hannah to be the best version of herself.

And Baker might want to be with Hannah, too - if both girls can embrace that world-shaking, wondrous possibility. Contains mature themes.

STUNNING!!!

probably my most loved story to date. story was fantastic, all the characters story's and the narrator was brilliant. I'm not religious and although it has some parts about religion , it is by no means trying to make you believe or not believe something. It's a fanatic book and I would recommend it for anyone. listening to this book I could really feel for the characters, it gets right to your heart and you find yourself feeling there pain and happiness.

Almost made me cry

I got to be honest here I almost dnf it. I actually listed to the first 4hs or so at 3 ro 3,5 speed. It gets better after the first 30%. It starts very slow as we follow Hannah and her high school friends through everyday life, we can see the begging of what is going to be the main issues here, but it's all very slow paced.
After the initial 1/3 of the book things pick up a bit and we feel their struggle with finding themselves, discovering their nature and how that clashes with their catholic upbringing. Whilst it's very clear all the damage that strict and unforgiving religion that expects all to fit a certain mould is, there is also a beautiful spirituality part where they contemplate religion beyond the hate they get. There is alot of angst as our protagonist and her love interest tries to conform to societal norms.
It has a hea, but until we get there it's brutal.

A, bit heavy on religion for me but...

Bit too heavy on the religion aspect but otherwise a good rewarding and sensitive portrayal

A fantastic, moving story

This was a beautiful book. The writing was at times a little disappointing but at other times absolutely beautiful. The biblical imagery used was very effective and this book spoke to me greatly as someone raised Catholic. The love story is sweet and the happy ending makes this a must read, given so many stories about gay women end in heartbreak. This book evoked so many emotions for me and I would definitely listen to it again.

Amazing book! Go Kelly Q

I loved this book and found it difficult to put down once I started. I think part of the reason for this was that I could relate to the characters and their stories, but also because the author skillfully guided us through their journey, evoking a sense of pathos or emotional connection. Each character - Hannah, Baker, Joannie, and the boys - had their own significant moments. I felt like I could really get a sense of their school, and various teachers who also made me feel different thing. Love that it was a rich narrative with layers of depth. The narrator's storytelling was exceptional, adding to the overall experience. Will check out more by the same author! Highly recommend this !

Not what I thought

I bought this book thinking it would be a love story between the two girls, however after the first few chapters they barely share a scene together. It's much more of a reflection on one of the characters coming out journey and struggling to come to terms with her love for her best friend, the impact on her friendship group, and her faith in relation to her sexuality. Which isn't a terrible thing, it's not poorly written (I mean, all the reflection does drag on a bit!) but ultimately not the love story or book I thought I was buying. I feel like the story I wanted to read was what happened next.

Emptional

Took me a while to get into this story - alot of teenage/highschool filler that i sometimes struggled to get through - however the story of hannah and baker their stuggles with accepting themselves and the relationship with God and was extremely relatable and emotional.
