About this listen

The world’s greatest detective, Hercule Poirot – legendary star of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile – puts his little grey cells to work solving a baffling Christmas mystery.

CAN HERCULE POIROT SOLVE A BAFFLING MURDER MYSTERY IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS?

It’s 19 December 1931. Hercule Poirot and Inspector Edward Catchpool are called to investigate the murder of a man in the apparent safe haven of a Norfolk hospital ward. Catchpool’s mother, the irrepressible Cynthia, insists that Poirot stays in a crumbling mansion by the coast, so that they can all be together for the festive period while Poirot solves the case. Cynthia’s friend Arnold is soon to be admitted to that same hospital and his wife is convinced he will be the killer’s next victim, though she refuses to explain why.

Poirot has less than a week to solve the crime and prevent more murders, if he is to escape from this nightmare scenario and get home in time for Christmas. Meanwhile, someone else – someone utterly ruthless – also has ideas about what ought to happen to Hercule Poirot …

Excellent story and marvellous narration

It’s like Agatha Christie herself had written. Very intelligent plot and engaging story. The narrator manages to give life to the characters in particular the Detective Hercule Poirot.

Great festive listen!

Big fan of Sophie Hannah’s Poirot stories, and this is another great addition - I also absolutely love the narrator, he does such a fantastic job! This one was a wee bit long winded and obvious, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it!

Superb Poirot mystery

This is the best book in the series so far. Really enjoyed it. I ran out of Christie’s a long time ago and I’m so grateful for these new stories

Very Christie-like.

This Sophie Hannah book produces the most "real" Poirot of all of her books, so far: the writing was pithier and more Christie-like than all of the other books which are all excellent but, to me, never absolutely rang the Christie bell. The story is excellent in every aspect of the Christie whodunnit style, the reading is superb, as always, and Catchpool comes into his own as a character that can join the ranks of the great lady's own Poirot sidekicks. The denouement is stunning in it's revelation, and the book ends in a wonderful manner with a explanatory missive from one of the characters and a cracking little joke from the great detective. Wonderful!

Almost

Honestly a lovely story. Poirot however, a tad laborious. That said it was worth the acquisition and thoroughly enjoyable.

Really enjoyable

Love these books - very similar in atmosphere to Agatha Christie, which is some achievement… And this one wasn’t over-written, which was my only complaint of SH’s previous Poirot story. Hope more will follow…

Engaging, entertaining and well read.

Engaging characters and storyline, excellent narration. If you enjoy beautifully ironical humour and plots that keep you guessing, this one is for you!

I'd definitely enjoy hearing more of Catchpool and Poirot's adventures.

Great story & excellent narration

I’m a fan of Sophie Hannah’s Poirot novels and this one did not disappoint. It is a good stand-alone novel, so you don’t need to have read the others before starting this one. At first it feels like the solution comes out of the blue, but that’s because the clues are buried so well in the text. Rhind-Tutt does a great job of the narration, including a great range of voices for female characters without the weird high pitched tones that some actors use. As a fan of the other well-known narrators, David Suchet and Hugh Fraser, I enjoy Rhind-Tutts versions very much and would recommend this audiobook.
