Summary

Bloomsbury presents Hood Feminism written and read by Mikki Kendall.

'It is absolutely brilliant, I think every woman should read it' PANDORA SYKES, THE HIGH LOW
‘My wish is that every white woman who calls herself a feminist will read this book in a state of hushed and humble respect ... Essential reading' ELIZABETH GILBERT

I'm a feminist. Mostly.
I'm an asshole. Mostly.

All too often the focus of mainstream feminism is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few.

Meeting basic needs is a feminist issue. Food insecurity, the living wage and access to education are feminist issues. The fight against racism, ableism and transmisogyny are all feminist issues.

White feminists often fail to see how race, class, sexual orientation and disability intersect with gender. How can feminists stand in solidarity as a movement when there is a distinct likelihood that some women are oppressing others?

Insightful, incendiary and ultimately hopeful, Hood Feminism is both an irrefutable indictment of a movement in flux and also clear-eyed assessment of how to save it.

Game changer

Kendall articulates succinctly what women like me have experienced fir decades on both sides of the Atlantic. This is THE definitive code for all women of color; it explains how and why white feminism has ‘never had our back’ and never will do. I will be giving this to my students, nieces and god- daughters- and my well-meaning woefully wrong ‘woke’ white friends.

Amazing book, excellently read by the author. Everyone should read it, especially white women (including me).

Excellent Read

Mikki Kendall has produced an absolutely fantastic book that approaches feminism and feminist issues in such an intersectional approach, I have learnt soo much from this truly fantastic book and would really recommend all to read especially those who may consider themselves a feminist.

Confronting, but in a good way

As a self-proclaimed feminist, I found large parts a struggle. But a healthy struggle, one I which I knew I had to have.

Interesting and recommended.

This is an excellent audiobook of essays about the experience of black women in the United States of America (not only black, but other ethnic minorities).
I learned a lot that I had not been aware of.
Some of the facts shocked me.
I also had not realised that some feminists were/are white supremacists, or, more often, ignorant about the issues faced by black women.
So much so, that black women don't even feel that the 'feminist movement' speaks for them.
I am sure that what I have learned has implications for other countries including the UK.
The book was very well narrated and enjoyable to read and I finished it in a few days.
Yes 🙂 it has chapter/essay headings in the audiobook.

Challenging but important read.

This is a challenging but important read, which makes no apologies for how uncomfortable it may make some readers. It highlights how middle class white feminists have often (at best) failed to consider issues of race, homophobia, transphobia, class and poverty, and how the feminist movement needs to do better and challenge its own biases if it really wants to fight for the rights of all women.

Excellent

Great book, very well written - can be both emotional as well as thought providing. The only minor thing I would say is that sometimes the narrator's voice would abruptly change to va ery softly spoken and quiet tone from her regular voice, which made it a bit difficult to focus on what she was saying - but perhaps that was just me. Otherwise great, one of the rare books that isn't only focused on issues, but looks at the history, how that has shaped the context of the issues today, as well as offering solutions. Excellent read, highly recommend
