About this listen

In the world of Altadas, there are no more human births. The Regime is replacing the unborn with demons, while the Resistance is trying to destroy a drug called Hope that the demons need to survive.

Between these two warring factions lies Jacob, a man who profits from smuggling contraceptive amulets into the city of Blackout. He cares little about the Great Iron War, but a chance capture, and an even more accidental rescue, embroils him in a plot to starve the Regime from power.

When Hope is an enemy, Jacob finds it harder than he thought to remain indifferent. When the Resistance opts to field its experimental landship, the Hopebreaker, they find they might just have a chance to win this war.

I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I had never been exposed to any of Dean F. Wilson's work in the past, but I love my sci-fi and thought this would be right up my alley. Thankfully I was correct in my assumption and found this book to be an enjoyably entertaining adventure.
The world itself is interesting and I'd love to see it fleshed out in subsequent books, where demons have cursed women so that all children are born demons.
The story follows Jacob, a smuggler of sorts, as he his captured and imprisoned for smuggling 'contraceptive amulets' allowing for human births, while in jail he is enlisted in a human resistance against demons and the story only unfolds from there.
The narrator R.C. Bray is excellent as always and really brings the book to life, I feel like I could listen to him read a shopping list and find it interesting.
The only real issue I had with the story is that I actually think it should've been longer, allowing relationships in the story to progress at a slower, more believable pace. But apart from that I really enjoyed the book.
Highly recommended if you enjoy Sci-fi!

RCBray does a great narration as always

seems like a strong start to a series, looking forward to book 2

Just enough character development for a short story, yet somehow we still come to care for the characters in the little time we had.

Story isnt the most original for those of us who have read/listened to a libraries worth of books, but is perfect for new readers of all ages looking to see if this genre fits well for their taste.

Narration is top notch as it always is with R. C. Bray. I swear im going to start hearing him narrate my dreams because ive heard him so often.

Perfect for introducing people to the genre

I enjoyed this for the most part, it follows a character called Jacob who is a smuggler but winds up in the midst of a resistance and regime war. There were many parts which I liked to the story, especially the way demons were being born. It was a good story but it needed to be much more fleshed out as well as to allow for relationships to grow more naturally as well. I hope the second book in the series will expand and go into more detail in certain areas. I still recommend if you enjoy Sci-Fi.

Enjoyable

the narrator is awesome. apart from that, the story doesn't make much sense to me. its like the story is only 50% complete. a lot more world building needs to happen.

incomplete story
