About this listen

Hot Mess [n.] - someone who is often in a state of disarray while remaining attractive in spite of their flaws and repeatedly finds themselves in uncomfortable predicaments.

Ellie Knight is just like you. Her life isn't turning out the way she thought it would. Some people might say she's a hot mess, but then who really has their s--t together before they're 30?

It's Valentine's Day, and Ellie Knight finds herself eating Nutella in the bar stock after a no-show date. But single doesn't have to be the loneliest number, does it? She goes back home to her flatshare and weird flatmates. It's okay there's black mould everywhere, right?

With a hangover from hell, she goes to the office job she thought she would have quit by now. Doesn't everyone hate their job? Maybe Ellie isn't following the official life plan, but perfect is overrated.

For fans of Fleabag and Girls, this is a fresh and funny coming-of-age story with a single-girl heroine that everyone will relate to - a modern Carrie Bradshaw meets Bridget Jones. Read by Elisabeth Hopper.

Real and funny

Elisabeth Hopper is brilliant. Between them she and Lucy Vine transport you straight back to those days of cringe-worthy blind dates, Monday morning hangovers and wondering if that dress on the floor is clean enough to pick up and wear again - and miss them! Totally hilarious story, well written with some great dialogue. And Ellie's dad's novel - you don't know whether to laugh or cry. The ending, for me, was just far too suddenly convenient hence this otherwise fab listen not getting 5 starts across the board.

Don't be fooled- it's still chick-lit

I was pointed to this book via a podcast- and was given to think that this book is a feminist twist on the usual rom-com/chick-lit. Alas, it was not to be. Although this book has a different twist in that the ending is not the usual syrup-y nonsense, in its on way, it till belongs to the "summer beach reads" list. It's light, vacuous with little to say.

A pleasant listen

A pleasant story, well read by the narrator. I can’t say it was gripping or the best book I’ve ever read/listened to, but it kept me entertained and happy to stick with it until the end.
The characters were likeable and believable and it was quite funny in places.
I would recommend for an easy, slow paced listen.

made me laugh the whole way through

The performance was excellent. It's nice to read a book about a woman who's purpose in life isn't just to find a man!

Easily My Favourite Audio Story

This story, with its surprising two novels in one bonus had me literally laughing out loud, engrossed throughout, moments of actual tears of sadness, but mainly just the largest of smiles.

Brilliantly written and fabulously performed, this is easily my favourite audio story I've listened to, which I listened to pretty much continuously until it had finished because I didn't want to it to stop and wanted to know what would happen next.

Will listen to it every time I want to cheer up

Excellent reading to a brilliantly funny, smart, honest and relatable novel. I have bookmarked the parts with her dad`s novel and have listened to them several time. It's a mood boosted for sure, can't help laughing out loud every time - which happens hardly ever. About the novel itself - I love how it's all about self love and finding one`s passion rather than obsessing over a partner.

Unpredictable and wonderful

I absolutely loved this book and the narration was wonderful (although there were a few poorly chosen inflections).

At the beginning I did wonder whether it was going to be a generic ‘chick lit’ novel following the life of a twenty something as she found love, but it was such a refreshing and surprising book.

The feminist undertones are wonderful and the growth of the central character was so well written. Ellie is very relatable and her journey to self-knowledge is gritty and real.

The ending does smack a *little* of a happy ever after with nicely neatly tied up ends, but not in the cheesy ‘and then they got married and everyone was deliriously happy’ way.

If you’re unsure, give it a go. I found it really addictive and I’m definitely going to check out more by the same author and same narrator.

This is THE BEST audio book I've listened to!

Absolutely hilarious!! Story is brilliant and really insightful. Narrator is great (best I've heard).

Anyone 25-35 who isn't rushing to get married and have children will totally relate.

Her dads books was possibly the best thing I've ever heard. Even my boyfriend thought this book was one of the best he had heard - proving how non chicklit/fluffy it was!

The Dad...

I really enjoyed this book mostly, great narration, perfect age voice for the main character (which so many get wrong) the writing is fun and easy and I love her the turns of phrase, characters are engaging and relatable...mostly.
The Dad - sigh - she has written him as if he is 90 not 60! I know he is meant to be old before his time and living in a small town but to try and believe (spoilers ahead) that he has never been to a cocktail bar and his over awe at all these ‘new’ things - like Pringle’s is just silly and cringe. My parents are both 65 and therefore grew up through the 60s and 70s, of course someone of that era will have had cocktails! She’s written him like he is stupid as well as old (even though 60 is not old by today’s standards. That and the book he writes, which becomes part of the story, was a real annoyance, I skipped those bits after the the first instalment. Just my opinion though and the rest was great.
