About this listen

The Tudor era encompasses some of the greatest changes in our history. But while we know about the historical dramas of the times, what was life really like for a commoner?

To answer this question, the renowned 'method historian' Ruth Goodman has slept, washed and cooked as the Tudors did. She is your expert guide to this fascinating era, drawing on years of practical historical study to show how our ancestors coped with everyday life, from how they slept to how they courted.

Exploring how the Tudors learnt, danced and even sat and stood according to the latest fashion, she reveals what it all felt, smelt and tasted like, from morning until night.

last book I listened to from Ruth narrated her self so it took me a while to get my head round some one else doing the speaking but I will register to this over again as it has so much information in the content, totally worth it

so much information

I really enjoyed this book, as in many ways it fleshed out the other books I'd read about late medieval England. The fact that Ruth has done her best to "live the life" really helped her describe, if not the reality, something very close to it. The narrator did a good job, but (editing oversight?) there were sometimes surprisingly long gaps between what I assume were paragraphs or sections.

Excellent and engaging

I love this book. I enjoy listening to it again and again. I find the subject gentle yet infinitely interesting due to the detail in which is written. however it is also beautifully read, something I found to be very consoling, through a recently scare stay in hospital. the two combined make this a perfect book.

relaxing and informative

I loved this book for several reasons. Primarily because this book is so easy to listen to and understand by everyone. I think Ruth Goodman is a marvellous historian and shows how life was through enacting daily life. Her writing is clear and easy to follow and shows the lives of ordinary people. And as a historian I greatly admire all the research that is undertake to produce work of this depth

The Tudor what is.......

The story is interesting and lively and what you would expect from Ruth, HOWEVER, the narrator stutters on a couple of occasions , the voice isn’t consistent and she starts words very sharp and loud and sometimes on words throughout a sentence and at the end of words

Let down by the narrator

As a lover of social history and the Tudor era this was perfect. Very soothingly narrated by Patience (a clear deep mature voice) and very in depth detail of all the minutiae of daily life of the time across the social classes. would recommend for fans of Ian Mortimers the time travellers guides. I take naps to this audiobook or put it low volume when sleep is evasive at night. very relaxing to listen to. I also enjoyed the Victorian era audiobook, also by the same author and narrator.

Wonderful Content & Wonderful Narration
