About this listen

Aurora Ares, owner of a bar that caters to paranormals, is content with her life. When children start to go missing in a small Midwest town, it looks like magic is to blame. With the paranormal world in political turmoil, it falls to Aurora to save the children. The problem is, she's a rogue vampire without the support of a coven.

Logan Wayne, who deals with powerful artifacts of magic, might be the best person to help, but his priorities are questionable at best. In order to save the children, Aurora will need the help of her two wolves and a man she can't trust. To make matters worse, it doesn't take long before she becomes the next target.

Content advisory: this book is intended for mature audiences and contains violence, disturbing imagery, and strong language.

Well written, good narration and interesting story

This is a great start to an interesting Paranormal Fantasy series, it is a world much like our own but with creatures, magic and strange things being real but hidden.

Despite Aurora the main character not being human she is very easy to relate to with understandable motivations this makes her a great viewpoint character. I love the two dogs they have a lot of character to them even if they don't have a single line of dialog.

Rain Oxford’s writing is well paced and engaging, they have done a brilliant job crafting their setting and characters. The mysteries and investigating parts of the book are interesting, the story is gripping from start to finish, if I was able to I would have listened to it from start to finish in one go.

Sarah Puckett did a wonderful job narrating, portraying the different characters, each with unique voices and believable emotions enhancing the listing experience.

I very much enjoyed my time listening to this book and would recommend it. I am really looking forward to the next book and would happily listen to another book written by Rain Oxford or narrated by Sarah Puckett.

All and all this is well worth a listen.

Great story but bad narrator

The bad thing about audiobooks is that a story can stand or fall because of the narrator. You can have the greatest story, if the narrator sucks, it will ruin the experience.
IMO, Sarah Puckett is not a great narrator. She’s not Superbad either, but she isn’t good. Her different voices aren’t bad but the main voice does not differ from the painting picture narration. If you get what I mean.
Also, some of the chars ended up having the same voice as the main char, which could make things confusing.
I also suggest that at least for the first half of the book you change the speed to 1,1. It’s a small difference but Sarah reads so slow in the beginning that it’s really of putting and the small speed boost makes things more enjoyable. In the last hour and a half I turned it back to normal speed because she finally picked up her speed.
To me it feels as if she’s very new to narrating and she didn’t feel confident at all.
But I really love Rain Oxford’s books and if you read them in order, this book does go more in depth on the shadowman. Without actually naming him.The story I. Itself is great. Which I focused on
So I do recommend you reading/listening to this book, but if you have the option, I’d recommend actually reading it instead of listening to the narration.
I sadly don’t have that option...
Luckily for us, Sarah Puckett only narrated 2 books I. This wonderful world Rain Oxford shaped for us.

.Urban fantasy Heaven !Utterly amazing !

Where does Hunting Shadows rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is right up there with my long standing favorite book series by my favorite authors:Patricia Briggs and her Mercy Thomson books,Ilona Andrews and the Kate Daniels series books and Kim Harrison's The Hollows series with Rachel Morgan.Every once in a while, a book comes along that shatters your expectations. Case in instance is a book so explosive and intense, deeply enthralling and equally disturbing. A book you'll proudly hold dear And to have this book ,a master piece in urban fantasy I believe ,read by Sarah Puckett,a narrator who is quickly becoming a favorite of mine alon with Kate Rudd ,Marguerite Gavin,Renee Raudmanand Angela Dawe, was just perfect!

What other book might you compare Hunting Shadows to, and why?

I am a true Urban fantasy addict and connoisseur and I can honestly say that the story was amazing as was the Lore behind the Vamps, shifters and other wonderful creatures in the book was truly inspired.I liked that new and clear "rules" were given to each race. The Author didn't just expect us to carry our knowledge over from other urban fantasy and folklore.Thats why Rain Oxford's book has an epicly strong start to what I hope will be a long standing series.I would liken it to the series I mentioned earlier in that respect. Something special and unique.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I wholeheartedly enjoyed it all from start to finish but if pressed I will say I really loved Aurora stopping the wolf fight at the start, that was the first indicator that this was going to be an amazing book. Also I can tell you with glee how much I loved the wolf hybrids Damos and Phobos.those guys are just pure awesome.I loved their relationship with Aurora too. That is the sort of thing that makes a series!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

it made me laugh ,cry, sit on the edge of my seat and get lost completely in this world that Rain Oxford created and Sarah Puckett brought to life with her narration. The emotion involved and the highs and lows in this book are extremely real, it makes you feel at the right things, and keeps you there, waiting and hoping things turn out okay.

If you like Urban fantasy this is for you! It's rare to find books this good and I will be eagerly awaiting book 2 in this series.
