It’s always inspiring to hear someone overcome addiction, but I wish there were a few more stories.

The account by Richie Farrel demonstrates how terrifyingly easy it is to become an opiate addict. It is difficult to comprehend just how powerful a heroin addiction is unless you have seen it at first hand. It a curse under which the victim (yes, victim) can think of nothing but the next fix. Lies, deceit and theft become the norm - overriding even the wellbeing of loved ones, who are also victims of the addiction. There are disappointments for all concerned each time an addict relapses. Too often addicts are regarded as ‘scum’ who ‘choose’ to take drugs but, as with Farrell, at the heart of drug abuse is the need to escape painful issues that the addict is unable to resolve. The harsh truth is, once an addict, always an addict and so many find they cannot live with heroin and cannot live without it, until in despair they take their own lives. Governments around the world pay more for the ‘War On Drugs’ then ever is invested in helping people to overcome this terrible illness. How much better it would be to invest in mental health services. Prevention is always better, for there is no absolute cure.

Ritchie Fallon is a scumbag heroin addict with a lot of shameful secrets. Born with CP, his Father despised him for his imperfections. Living in terror of his Fathers violent rages and unpredictable, unhinged, behaviour he faced violent beatings and having to witness the beating and belittling of his Mother and Brother. Suffering from PTSD he turns to Heroin to numb the pain and in the process loses everything that matters to him. After a failed suicide attempt he is sentenced to a 7 day rehab . The time in the unit allows Ritchie to reflect on the harm that he has done and the harm that was done to him. The audiobook focuses on that decision point and a cast of colourful characters helps Ritchie to finally take action and try to put the past behind him and to stride into a better future. Funny, bawdy, sentimental, and portentous, Richie faces up to the lies and bullshit that he has wrapped around himself like a shield. The reader is with Ritchie every step of the way, despite his self pity, excuses, and confessions of all manner of sordid behaviours. I hope he makes the run of his life and heals.
