Summary

Walter has a rubbish job, so has Margaret. But when they meet through a dating agency, neither is who they seem. Margaret's married for a start, and Walter's encounter with her husband, Billy, leaves him black and blue. Billy's a dodgy accountant for politician and racketeer Pink Harrison, who is about to come unstuck.

Superintendent James Mallow is determined to nail Pink. Meanwhile Redmond O'Boyle, professional terrorist and occasional birdwatcher, is languishing in a Colombian jail, and his only way out is to kill himself and trust in reincarnation.

real NI local feel to it

I'm not an expert, but have been to northern Ireland a few times.

I really enjoyed the advent of the narrator and the local expressions used by the characters.

Great story, great characters and great narrator.

Great Narrative

Great rolling tale around lots of different characters in Belfast. Vivid descriptions worked well on audiobook. Very entertaining story. One of those stories where you could do with a longer epilogue tying up all the loose ends and letting you know what happened next, but I suppose like all good things, the book had to end sometime!

great story filled with humour and sarcastic wit

Another Colin Bateman classic. I laughed throughout at the sarcasm and humorous twists - made all the better by the brilliant narration.

Loved it!

This is Bateman at his best - funny and sharp. I really enjoyed listening to this book and the narration was great. I'd highly recommend it.

Darkly humourous and wonderfully plotted

I thoroughly enjoyed this. The narration was excellently executed with a range of distinctive voices. What I enjoyed most though, was the way the stories and lives of all the characters touched and intertwined at different points throughout.

Long but good

A slow book to start but you gradually get drawn into it and by the end don't want the book to finish. Superbly narrated as usual by Adam. Many laugh out loud parts!

Another Great Find in Audio

Having read mystery man, I decided I wanted more of this Author's humour so I searched for the longest audio out there and never once, whilst listening, did I tire of the humour. Brilliant Writer. I am now on my third book by this Author and my aim is to listen to all of his written work. Thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you

Hilarious, clever, great dialogues

"Funny" books can quickly get tedious; once you know the author's style you start to anticipate the jokes and the humour lessens with each one. Not with this one though. It's a long book, but kept me entertained from beginning to end. I listen to audiobooks at night as an alternative to reading because it keeps my husband awake when I have the light on. Listening to this probably disturbed his sleep more than a reading lamp, because I kept laughing. In addition to the humour, it's also a damned good novel. Well structured, good plot and great characterisation. I listened to it 2-3 months ago and it is as fresh in my mind as if I had finished it yesterday. I'll definitely be buying more of Bateman's books. Oh, and last but not least, the narration was fantastic. The voice felt completely right, the pacing was excellent and the Northern Irish accent was strong enough to suit the content without ever being difficult to understand.
