Summary
This is a memoir as wry, funny, moving and vivid as its inimitable subject himself. This audiobook, read by the author, will be a joy for both lifelong fans and for a whole new generation.
John Cooper Clarke is a phenomenon: Poet Laureate of Punk, rock star, fashion icon, TV and radio presenter, social and cultural commentator. At 5 feet 11 inches (32in chest, 27in waist), in trademark dark suit, dark glasses, with dark messed-up hair and a mouth full of gold teeth, he is instantly recognizable. As a writer his voice is equally unmistakable and his own brand of slightly sick humour is never far from the surface.
I Wanna Be Yours covers an extraordinary life, filled with remarkable personalities: from Nico to Chuck Berry, from Bernard Manning to Linton Kwesi Johnson, Elvis Costello to Gregory Corso, Gil Scott Heron, Mark E. Smith and Joe Strummer, and on to more recent fans and collaborators Alex Turner, Plan B and Guy Garvey. Interspersed with stories of his rock and roll and performing career, John also reveals his boggling encyclopaedic take on popular culture over the centuries: from Baudelaire and Edgar Allan Poe to Pop Art, pop music, the movies, fashion, football and showbusiness – and much, much more, plus a few laughs along the way.

Give it a name!
I loved this, well done to the good Dr, highly recommended. I’m pleased I went for the audible version rather than the book, hearing it read by the man himself really brought his story to life. I’m sure I’ll re-listen on occasion too. Great stuff.

What a corker
Kept me company on my nightly commutes over the Peak District back to north Manchester. Brought the spark back to my forgotten love of meat and potato pies.

Most entertaining autobiography I have ever read.
I bought the audible version of this book as I would have read using his voice anyhow. I'm glad I did. Having him narrate it himself takes the irony, the pathos, the humour, the sadness, the desperation to a level you wouldn't have been able to reach reading it to yourself. A truly remarkable story of a remarkable life.

Luxury... pure unadulterated luxury
So pleased Dr John Cooper Clarke narrated his memoir. His word smithery is at times laugh out loud (as they say in modern parlance) and has helped me pass two weekends of domestic drudgery. What a life he has had and his enthusiasm for music, style and Americana is quite infectious and has led to me checking out some of his musical references. You don’t need to know about his poetry - his life is interesting in and of itself. I loved this and has bought much joy to me during this bloody awful pandemic. Thank you Dr Clarke. Glad you didn’t come across as a right c u next Tuesday.....
