Come preparazione al prossimo rapporto del 2022 l'IPCC (Gruppo intergovernativo sul cambiamento climatico) ha presentato nell'ottobre 2018 lo "Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C" (rapporto speciale sul riscaldamento globale di 1,5 gradi centigradi). Questo rapporto ha avuto un notevole impatto sull'opinione pubblica mondiale ed è stato al centro del dibattito nella Conferenza sul clima (COP24) del dicembre 2018 tenuta a Katowice in Polonia, soprattutto per la segnalazione, fatta dagli scienziati dell'IPCC durante la presentazione del rapporto speciale in Corea del Sud, che restano circa 12 anni per tentare di mantenere il tetto di +1,5 °C di riscaldamento globale, che è poi l'obiettivo degli Accordi di Parigi. Dopodiché, anche soltanto mezzo grado di aumento delle temperature comporterà conseguenze devastanti per il pianeta e per la civiltà moderna.
