Summary

Do you want to talk to anyone, in any situation, with great ease? Do you want to have great success in relationships through verbal communication? Then you need this audiobook!

Effective communication is at the heart of all rewarding human relationships. The ability to both express oneself and to understand what someone is expressing to you is the foundation of making any relationship more fulfilling. Conversation is what separates us from all other species. It’s our ability to exchange ideas, views, and feelings with one another through the magic of spoken language.

But, maybe, you’ve had that moment, at a dinner party or even a crucial job interview, when your mind went blank. Or, maybe, you often say things you regret to those closest to you. Or, perhaps, you have an ongoing fear of talking with others. Or, you’re the painfully shy type. If any of these are true for you, then Improve Your Conversations will help you.

Good conversation has a flow like life itself. And just like life, conversation is full of ups and downs, good times and bad times, and achievements and setbacks. It’s our belief that the art and science of good conversation involves ongoing acknowledgment of this flow as it occurs. Life is conversation, and conversation is life.

You will learn:

  • The basic skills that will let you take your conversation to the next level
  • Ways how these skills are useful in a wide variety of settings: in the workplace, at home, with close friends, or total strangers
  • Ways how these skills will step up your game in those most dreaded arenas: public speaking and telephone conversation even if you are shy, not a good speaker, and/or always have difficulty talking to others

Some good points, but...

Some of the advice in here is intuitively very sound and inspiring, even if it does just seem to be the author's own ideas and observations. However, not much of the book turned out to be relevant to me as someone who is probably okay in conversation generally but is not naturally talkative and outgoing. Also, the author's bitter rant about people who use filler words in their speech (i.e. any normal person) was bizarre and off-putting.
It sounds like it is being narrated by a Simpsons character, which was strange at first but grew on me!

Very basic

This book is ok but covers the basics of communication which most people will already know, those of you looking for a more complex book should look elsewhere

Poor

I gave up on this with about 30 minutes to go and returned it, which is rare for me. It's possible to listen at about 1.8x speed and not miss anything. The content is dreadful, nothing insightful or scientific, mostly common sense. It's like someone with a laypersons interest in the topic wrote down everything they could think of or had heard about this topic on the TV, then padded it out.

Awful - avoid.

Don't be fooled by the high rating - I find the number of 5* reviews across all criteria very suspicious on this book, when you read some of them they are generic and almost certainly fake.
