Summary

New York, 1777. As the American Revolution rages on the mainland, the British Navy prepares for action at sea. Against a growing fleet of American and French privateers, the Navy must maintain its blockade of Washington's vital military supplies. Caught up in the turmoil, junior officer Richard Bolitho finds himself having to make momentous decisions in the heat of battle, decisions that will affect the lives of many men, and perhaps the outcome of history.

Michael Jayston

Excellent narration by Michael Jayston, delivers the story perfectly. The novel, as usual is hard to put down.

A Series to Binge on?

Given that I read this one about a month or so ago and just downloaded Book 9 I think it's fair to say that I am a fan of this grand old series. I first read them as a teenager and into my early twenties which is more years ago than I care to remember, sometimes these days I feel as old as the characters in these books!

And I think that's the great thing about historical fiction, it tends to age better than most types of books for obvious reasons. I enjoyed this one pretty much as well as I did back then, plenty of action, likeable characters and the open seas!

Terrible Sound Quality

obviously this has been recorded from a tape, the sound quality is terrible. I will persevere for now but it really should have been rerecorded in 2014 like the last one. Story is good and I suppose you get used to the bad audio quality after a while.

Terrible Audio Quality

This ebook's record quality is harsh, very noticeably lisping and deeply unpleasant to listen to. Quite unlike any other I've heard read by Michael Jayston, or by any other Audible reader for that matter.
The book's content is much like other Bolitho works, pleasantly undemanding and a series of cameos much in the Hornblower vein. But without the Hornblower originality - or masterful quality, in my opinion. But head and shoulders above the "Lucky Jack Aubrey" stuff by Patrick O'brien.
But that dreadful rasping audio quality is quite unforgivable, especially from a source with the resources of Amazon.
