About this listen

For Claire Roth, an established psychotherapist, her new patient - Jody Goodman, a young filmmaker - is a welcome diversion from her predictable life. Jody, successful, yet uncertain, is disarmed by Claire's interest and approval. Gradually, the lines between friendship and family, between love and compulsion, start to blur.

In a Country of Mothers is a transfixing psychological thriller, that forces us to confront our own judgments about sanity, danger, and desire.

H'omes couldn't be more deliciously named: she kicks over the doll's house and gives suburbanity a good shake.' ( Guardian)
'The imagination that shapes A.M Homes's fiction is exhilaratingly perverse.' ( New York Times Book Review)

This book is extremely low on thrills for a "psychological thriller". Far from "frenetic" as touted on the cover review, it would rather benefit from the swift knife of a good editor. I got to the end eventually but learnt nothing about life, mothers, or psychology along the way.

Thrill factor: zero

Adult neuroses and the tragedy of American sense of entitlement and despair brought vividly to life by exceptional narration. More an embodiment of the characters than narration.

A tale of the haunting of our past.
