Both enjoyable and informative

I understand why some people have said about the shouting but really I’ve heard far, far worse narrators. I enjoyed the whole book and listened quite happily till the end

The Narrator is really SHOUTY!!

This book is very padded out and could be much shorter But the worst of it is the narrator does a lot of Shouting and even worse she forgets to stop shouting when she is not doing quotes so whole minutes are shouting and quite frankly its giving me a head ache and Ive lasted 13 hours but I have to bail out for my own sanity

Beautiful, engrossing, poetic- an absolute joy

Please read the reviews of the kindle edition. There is nothing to add. Absolutely spectacular! The writing is beautiful, musical and poetic. The court intrigue is fascinating, the characters and the historical back ground are well researched and the scenery, interiors and costume descriptions are rich and lush.
Hella Haasse’s writing and Katherine Kellgren’s superb narration often made me feel as if I was enjoying a rich and spectacularly beautiful theatre production with many fascinating characters. An absolute joy!
Please could you do an audio production of The scarlet City from Hella S Haasse next?

Full and flavoursome...

Slow start to appreciate it's merits, but in the end, loved it. Characterful narration which suited it's content. Will read again!

Good, interesting well narrated but tough going

So this is actually good it if you keep going - the age in which the tale is set and the length of the book make it equal learning and entertainment. Katherine Kellgren works her socks off to make it interesting and engaging in a noble and mostly successful cause. Its one where the narrator, writer and listener all have to work at it to make it worth it but it is in the end!

Worst narration ever!

I was really looking forward to this, because it's a period of history I'm not so familiar with, but, for only the second time EVER, I had to give up after only a couple of chapters. The narration is absolutely atrocious - grating, aggressive, and the supposedly royal-class accents are so affected and unnatural. I think if I want to get to know this book I would have to actually read it.

Can't finish it

The narration is awful, I can't listen to another minute, it completely takes away from appreciating the story. Foolishly I believed the glowing reviews and didn't listen to the sample....thank goodness I didn't waste a credit on it! I struggled through several hours trying to get over myself but it's just too much to bear.

Put your fingers in your ears

The narrator shouts rather than narrates. Couldn’t carry on listening but what I did was incredibly slow paced.
