About this listen

The eagerly anticipated sequel to the huge best-selling landmark legal thriller Presumed Innocent.

Twenty years ago, Tommy Molto charged his colleague Rusty Sabich with the murder of a former lover; when a shocking turn of events transformed Prosecutor Rusty from the accuser into the accused. Rusty was cleared, but the seismic trial left both men reeling. Molto’s name was dragged through the mud and while Rusty regained his career, he lost much more.

Now, Rusty – 60 years old and a chief judge – wakes to a new nightmare. His wife Barbara has died in suspicious circumstances and once again, he is the prime suspect. Reunited with his charismatic lawyer Sandy Stern, Rusty will do anything to convince his beloved son Nat of his innocence. But what is he hiding?

In an explosive trial which will expose lies, jealousy, revenge, corruption and the darker side of human nature, Rusty Sabich and Tommy Molto will battle it out to finally discover the real meaning of truth, and of justice.

Critic reviews

"Turow has come up with a sequel to Presumed Innocent that is as gripping as Grisham, is expert in its psychological probing, and is extremely well written." ( Sunday Times)
"Immaculately plotted, and with a density of prose that fans of Dickens can admire. Innocent is very good indeed… Superbly done." ( Daily Mail)
"A rocket-fuelled read that refuses to loosen its grip until it has explained whodunit and how." ( The Herald)
"A meticulously constructed and superbly paced mystery, full of twists and the sort of technical arcana on which the genre thrives. The reader will learn quite a lot about toxicology screening, e-mail shredding software and the peculiar properties of antidepressants. The book's real distinction, though, is its stubborn, powerful undercurrent of regret, mostly felt by Sabich but also, to a lesser degree, by everybody else in this murky world, where even the bright light of the law can't show people, or their desperate acts, as they truly are... This is a lovely novel, gripping and darkly self-reflective. How can Scott Turow be doing this again? As the lawyers say, asked and answered." ( Scotsman)
"You'll be gripped." ( The Guardian)

One of the best audio books

It takes a little time to get used to the narrative being from differing people, but it is worth it. An interesting courtroom and family story, with some very real well drawn characters.

Subtle and mature thriller writing

This is a wonderfully crafted novel from an author at the top of his game. The 20 years which have passed since the original Presumed Innocent can be felt on every page, not just in terms of the weight of time felt my the main protagonists, but also in the quality, depth and subtelty of Turow's writing. The narration is also pitch perfect, making this one of the best books I've downloaded from Audible in all the years I've been a subscriber.

Excellent well-plotted story

Scott Turow is a master of "why" rather than "who" dunnit? This story is full of questions and answers, some believable, some not. The main character of Rusty is as enigmatic as previously and you're often wondering whether he's an outright villain or just a complex man.

The main narrator is first class, especially his voice for the Chinese-American trial judge. The female narrator is also excellent, although has a much smaller role. Really hard to stop listening to this story, so clear your diary and enjoy!

A bit disappointing

There's none of the whodunnit mystery about this story as there was in the first, and none of the characters are particularly likeable. But I kept listening for a big reveal which didn't come.

Kept me on tenter-hooks!

I had just read the page-turning prequel (Presumed Innocent) to this book, which I would recommend doing as you will enjoy Innocent even more. The latter takes up the life lawyer Rusty Sabich twenty years later. Most of the book is taken up by a blow by blow account of a trial for murder and though this is done in minute detail I was kept rapt by the roller-coaster of twists and turns as the weight of evidence flips repeatedly from the prosecution to the defence. It's not just a gripping legal case full of suspense but also a study of relationships with well-defined characters who relate events from different perspectives.
If you like forensic legal thrillers you'll enjoy this book.

Thoroughly enjoyed it

I decided to purchase Innocent due to watching "Presumed Innocent" on TV many years ago and wondered if the audio book would deliver. Struggling at first I watched the film again (and enjoyed it) then things fell into place and I was hooked.
I enjoyed Scott Turow telling the story from various viewpoints and the court room parts were excellent.
Thoroughly enjoyed the story and I mustst mention Narrator Edward Herrmann who was excellent.
