About this listen

Maigret's old colleague becomes an unexpected rival in book 24 of the new Penguin Maigret series.

In everyone's eyes, even the old ladies hiding behind their quivering curtains, even the kids just now who had turned to stare after they had passed him, he was the intruder, the undesirable. No, worse, he was fundamentally untrustworthy, some stranger who had just turned up from who knew where to do who knew what.

Three quarters of the story was excellent but, and I have experienced this many times, the end is a complete mess and a let-down. Only Gareth Armstrong makes it worth listening to. Simenon really did have a problem with how to end stories. Maybe he had a short attention span and so his mind was thinking about the next story so he hurried to finish the one he was on.

Great start but a real mess of an ending - as so often with Simenon.
