About this listen

It has been four years since ex-Navy SEAL Jack Haliday, had an explosive run-in with a biker gang, wounding their leader, Gunner. During those years, Jack had acquired everything he ever wanted: a beautiful wife, daughter, and a lovely home in the suburbs - everything was just about as perfect as it could get, until Gunner returned to twist Jack's world inside-out with a vengeance that he could never have prepared for. Now Jack has a score to settle and he's got some friends to help him do it.

This book seems to suffer from an identity crisis. Whilst the basic idea of revenge by both a betrayed biker gang leader betrayed, as he saw it, by an undercover cop, and that same feeling in the heart of the cop himself, the story is also swamped with domestic sentimentality an a hint of romance: it takes seven chapters to get to the action story itself, first establishing a rather unrealistic idealised marital situation, complete with blow by stroke sex scene and is constantly awash with more emotional clutter.

The narration, however, is good. Kevin Iggens' reading is well paced, with good intonation and expression and, although his voicings of the numerous characters is not overly individual, no clarity is lost by this. His was a distinctive reading rather than a full interpretation performance.

The writing is occasionally sloppy and repetitive but mostly fair. However, it is the constant change of scenarios and addition of unecessary sentimentality which, despite the frequent action and inventive ideas, made Into the Crossfire a less than pleasurable book for this reader.

I received my complimentary copy of the book, via Audiobook Boom, from the rights holder. My thanks for that. Despite some exciting and action filled sections, I found it too style confused to be able to recommend it.
