WARNING! No actual invasion or vampires!
(SPOILER ALERT) This book does not actually contain any vampires - which rather disappointed my boys (aged 5 and 7). The "vampiric" nature of the spiders involves the normal process by they inject venom and dissolve their victims.
The spiders in question are knee high, human eating and relentless ... and (SPOILER ALERT) appear only in the last few chapters of the book. The rest deals with very spooky possession of various characters by a particularly nasty by a Victorian ghost, obsessed with cleaning. This again, rather confused the audience who kept asking when the invasion would begin.
Once the boys had got over the disappointment that (a) there were no vampires and (b) the main character turns out to be a girl, and (c) there wasn't going to be a LITERAL invasion of spiders, they settled down and enjoyed the story. There are some genuinely funny moments and the plot is a cracker.
I'm sure they will enjoy this book more the second time, now that the confusion caused by the title is over. Russell Boulter's voice is lovely, although I'm not sure about his females. We also have "Invasion of the Christmas Puddings" narrated by him, where his comedy female stylings are a bit more convincing.
