About this listen

Following the critically acclaimed success of Dublin, this riveting sequel takes the story of Ireland from the 17th century onwards, picking up at the Reformation, and with it the devastating arrival of Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell heralds the inauguration of 200 years of Protestant dominance, throughout which many of the Irish people were impoverished and dispossessed. Dublin is made a Protestant capital, and Catholics become an underclass. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Irish political history, this powerful saga is brought to its conclusion.

This audiobook journeys through the centuries, right up to the 20th century's Easter Rising and Independence, passing through turbulent milestones such as The Year of the French, the Famine and The Home Rule Movement of Parnell along the way.

Superb

A brilliant story with excellent narration. A great mix of fact and partial fiction brings the troubles of Ireland to life.

This should be compulsory listening for those who do not live in Ireland !

Very well worth the hours listening to the two books which explain to those who only vaguely knew Irish history. It corrects one’s misconceptions and you are sad to leave all those families you’ve met on the way!

enjoyable history

I love history books and stories. I thought the narrator was great, I was very pleased listen to a book about Ireland from a reader who sounded Irish. my husband is from Kilkenny and never has any good stories, so Edward Rutherford is my new hero. #2 is Patrick May. it is a long story, never seemed long. I'm so glad there is a second book to look forward to, which I am just starting.

A great insight into Ireland’s history.

A wonderful written story which I know will lead me to Dublin in search of the places and ghosts of the past.

Beautiful

So many events, played out by many differing characters, all beautifully fleshed out with the events of the times. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks to the author.
