About this listen

They came, but not in peace. They came to destroy us. Our cities crumbled. Our people died by the billions. Their weapons were sophisticated beyond our worst nightmare. In this chaos, a teenage boy must get his sister to safety and, in doing so, become a man.

Iron Mike is a light science-fiction story. Yes, aliens invade, but they're more the background. It's a heavily character-driven book. It begins with Mike trying to get his younger sister to safety, to get her "behind a line of soldiers at Fort Knox" to keep her safe from potential looters and rapists. Along the way, Mike picks up strays, so his responsibilities increase exponentially. Hard decisions are made, as in any apocalyptic tale, and consequences are accepted.

Critic reviews

"Patricia Rose's post-apocalyptic coming of age science fiction novel, Iron Mike, is fast-paced, exciting, and thought-provoking…Rose's vision is grim and dark at times, but her heroes grow stronger, more self-reliant and competent with each challenge they face. This is a well-written and absorbing story that will prove to be a pleasant surprise for readers who have grown somewhat weary of the ubiquitous zombie and plague apocalypse tales so prevalent in recent years…It’s an impressive debut novel that is highly recommended." Original blockbuster waiting to happen,

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes as this book was recommended to myself, with high expectations I wasn't let down.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dur. Mike

What about Zachary Liebenstein’s performance did you like?

Faultless got me involved in the action in all areas making an already great book awsome

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

In areas I felt Mikes development from teen to leader

Any additional comments?

This was recommended by another author, so had high expectations, and was not disappointed. A true original look at earths the final hours. The personal development of Mike from teen to leader of men, I loved the addition of the dogs 1st person narration. And his integration to the whole story. The whole concept of the book I would only class as Awsome, the narration faultless the ending just right to end what could easily be a Hollywood blockbuster. Perhaps a different move for the Beiber

Great story stacked with original ideas.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Having a narrator who fits the character and the story is important to me, and prevents an immediate halt to my listening. Another pleasant side was the author's accurate use of profanity which to me clearly mirrored the situations. I don't usually read\listen to this genre of book but i was very impressed by the original concepts the author used. Great action, and some superb characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mike. I was impressed with how his innocent persona hardened and cracked and evolved through the book.

Which character – as performed by Zachary Liebenstein – was your favourite?

How could Hershey not be the favourite? Zachary seemed to enjoy this character and the innocence shone through.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen to audiobooks when i drive. So i usually get to finish a typical 10hr book in 4 - 5 days.
