Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Depression. Anxiety. Chronic pain. Phobias. Obsessive thoughts. The evidence is compelling: the root of these difficulties may reside in the traumas of our parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents. The latest research affirms that traumatic experience is passed on to future generations and that this emotional inheritance, hidden in everything from our gene expression to everyday language, plays a greater role in our health than ever previously understood.
Building on the work of leading experts in neuroscience and posttraumatic stress, Mark Wolynn has developed a pioneering approach to identifying and breaking these inherited family patterns. Having worked with individuals and groups on a therapeutic level for more than twenty years, It Didn't Start with You is his accessible, pragmatic and transformative guide to a method that has helped thousands of people reclaim their lives.

Best book for getting to know yourself and others
I got recommended this book by my friend. she knows that I'm always on the search to finding and getting to know myself as good as possible. If you're not ready to grow don't listen to this. this book is a great tool to discover more about yourself and your family. I unearthed issues in my own life from way back I wasn't even consciously aware off. This won't be the last time I've listened to this. it's a treasure.

The book storyline is good but inapplicable in real life.
The concepts introduced in the book felt swayed to favor the authors family situation. The concepts introduced felt a bit more fictional than based on reality.

Of no benefit
For me personally, I found no benefit from listening to this book. I stuck with it for a book club, otherwise I would have asked for a refund after the first chapter. I believe history can repeat itself, I believe our upbringing has a huge influence on how we grow. But the way this book was written, for me implied that it's OK to blame your parents/grandparents for your drinking, gambling, inability to be a decent parent etc and not take ownership and make changes necessary. if you wanted to let it, this book would give you permission to continue the victim mentality.
