Summary

Astronomer Royal Martin Rees shows in this bite-sized science classic how the behaviour and origins of the universe can be explained by just six numbers.

How did a single genesis event create billions of galaxies, black holes, stars and planets? How did atoms assemble - here on Earth and perhaps on other worlds - into living beings intricate enough to ponder their origins?

This book describes the recent avalanche of discoveries about the universe's fundamental laws and the deep connections that exist between stars and atoms - the cosmos and the microscopic world. Just six numbers, imprinted in the big bang, determine the essence of our world, and this book devotes one chapter to explaining each.

interesting but not for the novice

I enjoyed this but it was a little complex for me at points to follow audibly with only a formative understanding of the principles discussed.
The narrating voice is very soothing, sometimes a little too much because I found myself then not concentrating on the content!

For those who enjoy facts

A description of the facts of science and the fine sensitivity of the universe using six numbers, excellent use of facts.

Informative and Succinct

Very informative. Sometimes theoretically challenging however. Disagree with his metaphysical interpretation of the facts but appreciate how clearly he lays out the fine tuning of the universe.

Short and concise!

Very well put together and we'll explained so that even I (not a physicist) could achieve a much better understanding of the universe. Thank you

Complex and challenging, but very enjoyable.

I like the fact the Martin Rees is reading his own text. This is basically a lecture by Lord Rees, and as such is very enjoyable. The concepts are challenging, but it is very rewarding if you stick with it. It is short, but I know that I shall re-listen to this one, as there is a lot to take in.
