Summary

Katherine comes to the court of Edward III at the age of 15. The naïve convent-educated orphan of a penniless knight is dazzled by the jousts and the entertainments of court. Nevertheless, Katherine is beautiful, and she turns the head of the King's favourite son John of Gaunt. But he is married, and she is soon to be betrothed. A few years later their paths cross again and this time their passion for each other cannot be denied or suppressed. Katherine becomes the prince's mistress, and discovers an extraordinary world of power, pleasure and passion.

Gripping and interesting story, well told.

I really enjoyed this book and wanted to go on hearing more about this extraordinary woman. there were occasional jumps in the chronology which took some adjustment, but that's a minor criticism. The book was sympathetically read.

Wonderful

A wonderful listen that you could 'get lost in'. I found myself listening into the small hours, unable to switch off, so enthralling was the tale. Excellent narration

Fascinating.......

....brilliant. I have read this book several times since I first bought it some forty years ago. That alone says how good it is !! I have never read any other book more than once, It was only recently that I realised that it was available to download, and having listened, can honestly say that despite knowing the story well, I still found it amazingly addictive. Probably not for the historical purist but still an informative and very well written novel. It was also very well narrated. I highly recommend this book.

Good but not great.

This is part of the BBC Big Read (2004ish) which I am working my way through. This story did not grasp me at all and in all honesty about a third of the way through I felt like I was just going through the motions to tick it off the list. However, at some point just over half way through I realised I had become quite engrossed in the storyline.

The plight of Katherine having to deal with exceptional ups and downs (mainly downs) becomes increasingly absorbing and you start to genuinely care a little on the outcome. I personally wouldn't put this as an all time great but the I guess in a list of 100 it might just push in, maybe. The storytelling is top notch and at no point was I distracted by the reader, the delivery was great.

This is worth a read but there are others of similar genre I would prefer to read.

Interesting

A good story line but just too much padding and description which seemed irrelevant at times. Well read but not compelling.

A classic

An absolute masterclass in historical fiction wonderfully narrated. It's a long book but worth it.
