Summary
Bookstore owner Kerry Emerson finally seems to be back in control of her life. Her failure of a marriage firmly in her rearview mirror and her recent business expansion a success, she is in charge of her own future. One that is looking better than ever.
The sight of the tall man, with the familiar salt-and-pepper goatee pushing open the door of her store, sets her hair on end. He doesn't exactly bring good memories.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Damian Gomez is just looking for a decent cup of coffee when he walks into the small store offering books and brew. The pretty, feisty woman behind the counter is an unexpected surprise. Not at all unpleasant, especially since her finger that used to hold a wedding ring is now bare.
Her wild hair, boho style, and silvery grey eyes suddenly hold a lot of promise.
But when his office is pulled into an international investigation into the trafficking of rare books and manuscripts, the straight-laced SAC realizes he has to keep his distance from the woman who might well be involved.
Easier said than done, since fate seems determined to throw them together.

Mystery, crime, action, romance
This book has it all going on. Mystery, drama, crime, angst and romance.
A brilliant story that keeps your interest piqued throughout.
Fantastic characters, heart warming and hot moments, I can't wait to delve into more books in this series.
Brilliantly narrated. Can be read as a stand-alone.

really enjoyable listen
after listening to the northen lights trio of books from the same author, I looked for other books by her and came accross this series. I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in the series and am going straight in to the next one. this book has it all, romance, angst and a well planned story with a stella performance from both narrator's.

Pretty decent but…
I enjoyed this romantic suspense there was lots to keep my interest. Couple of things bugged me, firstly there was some repetition in the storyline when the narrator switched between the two points of view which was confusing at ones and the female narrator has a weird inflection in her voice where she stretched some vowel sounds for no particular reason that kind of grated on my nerves but once I was able to ignore that I enjoyed it.

Fabulous love, crime combination
I really loved this book, it combines two of my favourite genre. It was intense enough to keep me invested but not too intense to make me sad or worried at the story line. The narration was super engaging. Thanks

A really good listen 👍
Got this ‘included’. My first book by this author and was very happy I listened to it.
Good characters with an interesting story, lots of plot twists, a bit of a whodunnit really. Great chemistry with the leads🔥🔥and was surprised that they were meant to be older ie 30s, which was a refreshing change. It made them seem more sensible and level headed and have a normal outlook on life, rather than a bit young and naive. Often for this genre, the female lead is usually very early 20’s and the male is often portrayed as 8-10+ years older, she will often be a bit ditsy and he, a typical Alfa man of the world. It made it seem more real and believable that they were just regular people 👍 It had a bit of everything, ✔️ all 📦.
I will definitely be off to get the next in series. Highly recommend 👍🙂

Romance Wrapped in a Whodunnit
This is the first book in a series of connected standalone stories. There is also some crossover of characters from other series by the same author. You don’t need to have read any of the other series to enjoy this book though.
I initially read this as an ebook and the majority of the review is based on that initial reading however, the audio version was well narrated and in particular I enjoyed the male narrator, Christian Fox, who had a pleasant voice and natural style of delivery. He also didn’t go ridiculously over the top when acting a female role, which some male actors do. The female narrator, Muffy Newton, I had mixed feelings about. She had a pleasant voice and a good range of delivery for the different characters, but she had an annoying quirk of lifting the pitch of her voice at the end of sentences as though each one was a question. I think it was her natural accent rather than delivery for this character, but it was a little annoying because it stood out so much against the other narrator. I learnt to tune it out, but it took a little time each time I went back to the audiobook after a break. It wasn’t annoying enough to stop me listening to the next book in the series, even if she’s the same narrator.
Kerry met Damien, an FBI agent, when he rescued her from a kidnapping. She didn’t really like him at the time, plus she was married, admittedly it wasn’t a happy marriage but nonetheless, she wasn’t free to act on any attraction to the handsome man, even if he hadn’t been an ass to her.
Now Kerry is divorced and living in Durango, where Damien is now based. She owns a bookstore, and when he walks in to buy a coffee sparks fly and neither of them can work out what kind those sparks are.
When Kerry gets drawn into a case Damien is working on, her life is once more put in danger and he can’t resist trying to protect her.
I really enjoyed this book. As always, Freya Barker writes about engaging, flawed and real characters who have life experience, which only makes them more interesting. There is passion and emotion between the two main characters. They are also surrounded by friends, family and colleagues, who also have distinct personalities and play their part in the storyline.
What makes this romance different is the very intriguing and complex whodunnit wrapped around it. It kept me guessing right up to the end, who the ‘bad guy’ could be. The suspense part of the plot helps move the romance part forwards, but even without the romance that part of the story is interesting.
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series, as I believe the next book is about Damien’s sister, who was a major supporting character in this book, and someone I liked.

Keeping
Loved the dual narration of Christian Fox and Muffy Newtown, who make this a great listen.
Kerry has a bruised heart, having a divorced her abusive husband. Kerry is a strong, mature, and fun lady. Kerry is pulled into a nightmare involving stolen rare books, murder, mystery. Also fighting her attraction to an FBI agent from her, Damian. Damian has never forgotten Kerry, but then she was married, but he's not into relationships and makes no secret about that fact. Damian will not stop at nothing to protect the woman, who is changing his mind about relationships.
This book has suspense and mystery oh and romance.
Damian is kinda awesome and when we meet his family we understand why he is the way he is. His family is a big part of the story and how not only they help Kerry but you see Damian in another light as well.
