About this listen

Fantasy author Kyla knows dreams don't come true.

Isolated and grappling with debilitating depression, she copes by writing about the realm of Solera. Fearless heroes, feisty shapeshifters, and mighty dragons come alive on her pages. She adores her characters, but she doesn’t believe in happy endings. And if she can’t have one, why should they?

Kyla’s on the verge of giving up on everything when she wakes one morning, magically trapped in her fictional world. Now she’s with her most cherished characters: the friends she's always yearned for, the family she's never known. There's even someone who might be Prince Charming (if Kyla could get her act together and manage some honest communication). She’d surrender to the halcyon fantasy, except she knows a nightmarish ending awaits. Solera is at war, and its defenders are losing against the insidious villain spawned in the depths of Kyla’s mind. He feeds on the energy of dreams, seeks the destruction of all who oppose him—and Kyla’s become his number one target.

Kyla must trade her pen for a sword and fight to change her story's ending, but this isn’t a fantasy anymore. No happily-ever-after is guaranteed. And mental illness has robbed her of everything she needs to succeed: love, fighting spirit, hope. If Kyla can’t overcome the darkness inside her, she’ll die with her darlings.

Content Warnings: Depictions of mental illness including depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

The premise of this story was quite intriguing. An author wakes up in the body of the protagonist of the YA Fantasy series she’s writing. They’re fighting a war and she has to save them from the fate she wrote. The mental health rep was my main reason for choosing this book. It deals with some heavy topics so please, listen to the author's note that's in the sample.

I enjoyed the narration. It was narrated by the author and I enjoyed the way she brought the story to life. Considering she’s not a professional narrator (as far as I know) she put a lot of emotion into her portrayal of the different characters and her narrator voice was very engaging. The production quality wasn’t perfect – there were 3 moments when the volume dropped and I had to turn it up to be able to understand those few seconds – but otherwise, it was great.

This is a unique YA fantasy in that it delves deep into the mental health struggles of the main character and draws parallels between her personal battle and the war that is driving the story she’s fallen into. The mental health aspect of the story really spoke to me and had me close to tears on several occasions. There’s also a plot twist that will absolutely rip your heart out. It was absolutely genius and I didn’t see it coming.

The fantasy element didn’t grab me as much as I would have liked. It wasn’t until the last third of the book that I got emotionally which was when we really got into her battle with depression. I did enjoy the final battle scene, though.

In the author’s note, we’re told that this book is a love letter to those who have struggled – or still struggle – with depression, like the author has. I believe that is the heart of the story, with the fantasy elements serving as a means to tell that story. So, if you're going into this purely for the fantasy, you might be disappointed.

Moving story. Not your typical YA Fantasy
